There’s a new guy in the office. I don’t know his name, but he seems nice enough. He’s pleasant and   21  a lot.

It was Sylvia, one of the kindest, most  31  people I know. She has been walking a few paces behind me, and   32  she didn’t know the new guy either. And suddenly for Sylvia, the new guy wasn’t the new guy and more. He was Mitch, a   37  with children, hobbies, interests and a little shared history.

I was  38  by the ease with which Sylvia had made that change. It turns out it doesn’t   39  much to turn an unfamiliar face in the hall into a friend. You just have to   40  yourself and reach out a little. Ask a question. Learn a name. And just like that – no more new guys.

When other nine-year-old kids were playing games, she was working at a petrol station. When other nine-year-old kids were playing games, she was working at a petrol station. When other teens were studying or going out, she struggled to find a place to sleep on the street. But she overcame these terrible setbacks to win a highly competitive scholarship and gain entry to Harvard University. And her amazing story has inspired a movie, “Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story”, shown in late April.

Liz Murray, a 22-year-old American girl, has been writing a real-life story of willpower and determination. Liz grew up in the shadow of two drug-addicted parents. There was never enough food or warm clothes in the house. Liz was the only member of the family who had a job. Her mother had AIDS and died when Liz was just 15 years old. The effect of that loss became a turning point in her life. Connecting the environment in which she had grown up with how her mother had died, she decided to do something about it.

Liz went back to school. She threw herself into her studies, never telling her teachers that she was homeless. At night, she lived on the streets. What drove me to live on had something to do with understanding, by understanding that there was a whole other way of being. I had only experienced a small part of the society,”she wrote in her book Breaking Night.

She admitted that she used envy to drive herself on. She used the benefits that come easily to others, such as a safe living environment, to encourage herself that next to nothing could hold me down. She finished high school in just two years and won a full scholarship to study at Harvard University. But Liz decided to leave her top university a couple of months earlier this year in order to take care of her father, who has also developed AIDS. “I love my parents so much. They are drug addicts. But I never forget that they love me all the time.”

Liz wants moviegoers to come away with the idea that changing your life is as simple as making a decision.

Do you ever wonder why the English have one word for some animals and a different one for their meat? Why do they use pig and pork, cow and beef, and sheep and mutton. To find out, we have to go back to 1066. In that year, the Norman French invaded England and put a French king on the English throne. The French not only changed the government but they also changed the language. French became the language(王位) of the upper classes of society. And it remained that way for 300 years. Only these high society people could afford to eat meat. As a result, French words like porc (pork) and beouf (beef) came into the English language. However, poor English farmers raised the animals. So, the English language retained the words pig and cow from the native Anglo-Saxon.

The Norman French added about 10,000 French words to the English language. Seventy-five percent of them are still in use today.

Language experts estimate that English speakers who have never studied French already know 15,000 French words! Between one-third and two-thirds of all English words have French origin. Some words such as possible and avenue are the same in French and English; only the pronunciation changes. Other words such as ballet or a la carte retain their French pronunciation in both languages.

In French grammar, nouns have either a male or female gender, so adjectives(形容词) take different forms for each. English has only one adjective that does this, and it came from French. The world blond describes someone with light-colored hair. Blond is used for men, and blonde describes women. And they are also nouns.

Some French words that entered the English language have taken on completely different meanings. The French phrase a la mode means “in style.” In English, the phrase means “with ice cream.” Someone must have decided something eaten with ice cream was in style!

Now, as you learn English, you’re on your way to learning French!

45French was once popular among the upper classes of the UK because          .

Atoo many Frenchmen moved to Britain.    Bthe French brought animals with them

Cthe king and his officials spoke French    Dthe king allowed French to be spoken

46The underlined word “retained” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “             ”?

       Aadopted                 Bkept                       Cintroduced            Ddeserted

47Why does an English speaker find French easy to learn?

ABecause English and French share similar pronunciation.

BBecause English grammar and French grammar are similar.

CBecause English has great influences on the French language.

DBecause a large number of English word have French origins.

48From the difference in grammar, we can infer that           .

AEnglish nouns have different adjective forms.

BEnglish nouns have a male or female gender.

Cin French, the adjective mush agree with the noun in gender.

Dthe French word “flancee” is used for men and “fiance” for women.

49What conclusion can we draw from the text?

ALanguage is closely related to history and culture.

BLanguage is controlled by the upper classes of society.

CFrench and English words don’t have much in common.

DEnglish combines French and the Native Anglo-Sanxon.

C

How often do you travel by plane?

How much electricity do you use? These days everyone is worried about the size of their carbon footprint. In order to reduce global warming we need to make our carbon footprints smaller. But how much CO2 are we responsible for?

A new book by Mike Berners Lee(a leading expert in carbon footprinting) might able to help. How Bad are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything looks at the different things we do and buy, and calculates the amount of CO2 all of the following created: the ingredients, the clectricity used in the brewery, the equipment, the travel and commuting of the beer, and the packaging. It’s amazing how many different things need to be included in each calculation. And it’s frightening how much carbon dioxide everything procuces.

But all of this can help us decide which beer to drink. From Berners-Lee’s calculations, it’s clear that a pint(568ml) of locally-brewed beer has a smaller carbon footprint than a bottle of imported beer. This is because the imported beer has been transported from far away, and it uses more packaging. The local beer only produces 300g of CO2-but the imported beer produces 900g! So, one pint of local beer is better for the environment than three cans of cheap foreign lager from the supermarket.

Berners-Lee has even calculated the carbon footprint of cycling to work. Nothing is more environmentally-friendly than riding a bike, surely? Well, it depends on what you’ve h ad to eat before. To ride a bike we need energy and for energy we need food. So if we eat a banana and then ride a kilometer and a half, our footprint is 65g of CO2. However, if we eat becon before the bike ride, it’s 200g. In fact, bananas are good in general because they don’t need packaging, they can be transported by boat and they grow in natural sunlight.

So, does this mean that cycling is bad for the environment? Absolutely not, For a start, if you cycle, you don’t use your car, and the fewer cars on the road, the few traffic jams. And cars in traffic jams produce three times more CO2 than cars travelling at speed. Cycling also makes you healthy and less likely to go to a hospital. And hospitals have very big carbon footprints!

So maybe it’s time for us all to start making some changes. Pass me a banana and a pint of local beer, please.

50According to Berners-Lee, which of the following produces the most carbon dioxideCO2)?

AA pint of local beer we drink.                    BA pint of imported beer we drink.

CA banana we eat before a bike ride.         DThe bacon we eat before a bike ride.

51Why are bananas good in general?

AThey grow naturally.                                 BThey produces less CO2

CThey don’t need packaging.                     DThey provide energy for cycling.

52The underlined word brewery in Paragraph 3 most probably means “         ”.

Aa factory where beer is made                   Ba machine which makes beer

Ca container where beer is stored             Done of the things from which beer is made

53To make our carbon footprints smaller, we should often        .

Acycle to work                                            Bdrink more local beer

Ccalculate the amount of CO2                           Dbuy cheap things from the supermarkets

54What’s the most suitable title for the passage?

       ABIKES, BEER&BANANAS

       BSTARTING MAKING CHANGES

CHOW BIG IS YOUR CARBON FOOTPPINT?

       DTHE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF EVERYTHING

D

I try not to be biased(偏见)but I had my doubts about hiring Stevie. His social worker assured me that he would be a good, reliable busboy. But I had never had a mentally handicapped employee. He was short, a little fat, with the smooth facial features and thick-togued speech of Down’s Syndrome(唐氏综合症). I thought most of my customers would be uncomfortable around Stevie, so I closely watched him of the first few weeks.

I shouldn’t have worried. After the first week, Stevie had my staff wrapped around his stubby little finger, and within a month my regular trucker customers had adopted him as their official truck stop mascot. After that, I really didn't care what the rest of the customers thought of him. He was like a 21-year-old in blue jeans and Nikes, eager to laugh and eager to please, but fierce in his attention to his duties. Every salt and pepper shaker was exactly in its place, not a bread crumb or coffee spill was visible when Stevie got done with the table. Our only problem was persuading him to wait to clean a table until after the customers were finished.

Over time, we learned that he lived with his mother, a widow who was disabled. Money was tight, and what I paid him was probably the difference between them being able to live together and Stevie being sent to a group home.

That's why the restaurant was a gloomy place that morning last August, the first morning in three years that Stevie missed work. He was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester getting a heart surgery. His social worker said that people with Downs Syndrome often had heart problems at an early age and there was a good chance he would come through the surgery in good shape and be back at work in a few months.

A ripple of excitement ran through the staff later that morning when word came that he was out of surgery, in recovery, and doing fine. Frannie, my head waitress, did a little dance when she heard the good news. Belle Ringer, one of our regular trucker customers, stared at her and asked, “Okay, Frannie, what was that all about?”

"We just got word that Stevie is out of surgery and going to be okay."

"I was wondering where he was. I had a new joke to tell him. What was the surgery about?"

Frannie quickly told Belle Ringer and the other two drivers sitting at his booth about Stevie's surgery, then sighed: "Yeah, I'm glad he is going to be OK," she said. "But I don't know how he and his Mom are going to handle all the bills. From what I hear, they're barely getting by as it is."

Belle Ringer nodded thoughtfully, and Frannie hurried off to wait on the rest of her tables.

After the morning rush, Frannie walked into my office. She had a couple of paper napkins in her hand.

"What's up?" I asked.

“I cleared off that table where Belle Ringer and his friends were sitting after they left, and I found this. This was folded and tucked under a coffee cup."

She handed the napkin to me, and three $20 bills fell onto my desk when I opened it. On the outside, in big, bold letters, was printed "Something For Stevie".

That was three months ago. Today is New Years day , the first day Stevie is supposed to be back to work. His placement worker said he had been counting the days until the doctor said he could work, I arranged to have his mother bring him to work,  met them in the parking lot and invited them both to celebrate his day back. I took him and his mother by their arms. “To celebrate you coming back, breakfast for you and your mother is on me.”

I led them toward a large corner booth. I could feel and hear truck customers and the rest of the staff following behind as we marched through the dining room. We stopped in front of the big table. Its surface was covered with coffee cups and dinner plates, all sitting slightly on dozens of folded paper napkins.

"First thing you have to do, Stevie, is clean up this mess," I said.

Stevie looked at me, and then pulled out one of the napkins. It had "Something for Stevie" printed on the outside. As he picked it up, two $10 bills fell onto the table. Stevie stared at the money, then at all the napkins peeking from beneath the tableware, each with his name printed on it.

I turned to his mother. "There's more than $10,000 in cash and checks on that table, all from truckers and trucking companies that heard about your problems.  Happy Thanksgiving!”"

While everybody else was busy shaking hands and hugging each other, Stevie, with a big, big smile on his face, was busy clearing all the cups and dishes from the table.

55Why did the author have doubts about hiring Stevie?

AStevie was not that reliable.                      BStevie was mentally disabled

CStevie was too short and fat.                    DStevie was bad-tempered

AThat he made customers uncomfortable. BThat he couldn’t pay attention to his duties.

Bcould send Stevie to a group home

       Ccouldn’t thoroughly solve Stevie’s problem

Dcould make a great difference to Stevie’s life

58According to this text, Frannie sighed for Stevie’s          .

Ahealth problem      Bwork problem        Cfinancial problem   Dmental problem

March 22nd, Tuesday                          Cloudy

I watch TV until nearly 12 o’clock, so I could not go over my lessons. This morning I got up very late that I had to hurry to school without breakfast. Yet I was late for the first class. When I entered the classroom, the maths teacher also had to stop explaining an important problem, and all the eyes fixed upon me. My face turned red. Something even had happened on me in the English class. The teacher asked me to recite the text, but I could speak nothing but sorry, because I did not spend any times preparing my lessons. The teacher looked at me coldly. I stood at my bench, not dare to raise my head. What a terrible day I had! I will never do something like this again.
