My dad used to be a couch potato. But following all inflexibility of one leg,he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey.
Every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin’s chicken house in exchange for manure(肥料) .The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell,Dad said the stronger manure went along way towards producing better crops. For example, one of his cantaloupes(哈密瓜)generated a flagrance filling the entire house, and the taste was incredibly sweet.
As the vegetables started coming in,Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables,he announced he was going to make stew(炖菜).Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and stuffed it with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally,Dad turned off the cooker,it begin to cool and the pressure relief valve(阀)burst out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dad's pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad uncovered the pot,the smell nearly knocked us out.
Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house.Just how bad was it? The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!
Determined, Dad loaded our plates with steaming stew and passed them around,it didn’t look that bad,and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell,it didn’t offend the nose so much.I took a bit.It would never win a prize in a cooking competition.but it was quite appetizing, and we drank up every last drop of soup.

It is generally believed that people act the way they do because of their personalities and attitudes. They recycle their garbage because they care about the environment. They pay $5 for a caramel brulee latte because they like expensive coffee drinks.山东中学联盟
It’s undeniable that behavior comes from our inner character, but in many instances we also draw inferences about who we are,as suggested by the social psychologist Daryl Bern.By observing our own behavior,we can be strangers to ourselves. If we knew our own minds, why would we need to guess what our preferences are from our behavior? If our minds were an open book,we would know exactly how much we care about the environment or like lattes.Actually,we often need to look to our behavior to figure out who we are.
Moreover,we don’t just use our behavior to learn about our particular types of character—we infer characters that weren’t there before. Our behavior is often shaped by little pressures around us,which we fail to recognize.Maybe we recycle because our wives and neighbors would disapprove if we didn’t.Maybe we buy lattes in order to impress the people around us.We should not mistakenly believe that we always behave as a result of some inner character.
Whatever pressures there can be or inferences one can make, people become what they do,though it may not be in compliance with their true desires. Therefore,we should all bear in mind Kurt Vonnegut’s advice:“We are what we pretend to be,so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”
28.According to the text, personalities and attitudes__________.
A.result from one’s habits
C.reflect one’s taste
29.Which of the following would Daryl Bern most probably agree with?
A.The return of a wallet can indicate one’s honesty.
B.A kind person will offer his seat to senior citizens.
C.One recycles plastics to reduce the carbon footprints.
D.One buys latte due to his deep affection for coffee.
30.Which of the following best explains“compliance”underlined in Paragraph 4?
A.Harmony.
31.What does the author mainly discuss in the text?
A.Preferences and
habits.
C.Attitudes and
preferences.
D
The concept that caring for babies is mothers’duty is deep-rooted.While fathers are referred to pleasure seekers, scientists discovered a case of unusual paternal(父亲的)devotion in a Borneo jungle.Male smooth guardian frogs scarcely move or eat for days while attending a bunch of eggs.Once hatched, tadpoles(蝌蚪)climb on their fathers’backs to be transferred to pools of water.
About 10 percent flogs look after their young, and within that group, half to two-thirds rely on males to do the job.For instance, male parental care is not uncommon among the brightly colored Neotropical poison frogs. But in species that have been studied in detail, the males often continue to call to females and mate(交配)while tending eggs, and they spread their attention over several bunches.
To learn more about its behavior,Dr.Frogtegur,a behavioral ecologist at Kansas University, caught some smooth guardian frogs and allowed pairs to mate in glass containers.Surprisingly,in all nine instances, the male glued their eyes on the eggs.“They just stationed on or near the eggs,”Dr.Frogtegur said.“I had cameras running 24 hours, and sometimes I suspected they were broken because I couldn’t see any movement.”Males also didn’t call to females, indicating they could resist the desire to mate. After about 10 days, the males prodded(戳)the eggs, helping the tadpoles inside to spin.Afterwards, they stepped on the eggs to break them.“It’s kind of like waking up the children to go to school,”Dr.Frogtegur said. The hatched tadpoles climbed on the males’backs and arranged themselves neatly. He also discovered 10 males carrying their young in the wild.
Dr.Frogtegur’s study suggests that a rare phenomenon called sex-role reversal(颠倒)may be in play.In such species, females take the initiative(主动)in mating with males often because males never betray their young.
32.What does the author intend to tell us Paragraph 2?
A.Introduce the Neotropical poison frogs.
B.Justify male frogs attending kids.
C.Update us on male flogs’misbehavior.
D.Show smooth guardian flogs’uniqueness.
33.What do we know about Dr.Frogtegur’s frog experiment?
A.It shows the health condition of care-givers.
B.It pioneers the theory of sex-role reversal.
C.It stresses the frogs’effect on ecology.
D.It reflects males’“affection”for kids.
34.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The role of female
frogs.
C.Unusual mothers’devotion.
35.What will be discussed next?
A.More about sex-role
reversal.
C.The growth of hatched
tadpoles.

Text 1
M: Come on in. Why don’t you give me your coat? I’ll put it in the dryer for you. How were the roads?
W: It’s raining cats and dogs out there.
M: I’m glad you got here safely. Watch your step, though. I’ve just washed the floors in here.
Text 2
W: Father’s Day is this weekend. Don’t forget to give our dad a call on Sunday.
M: Oh, thanks for reminding me. I can never remember if it’s the second or third Sunday in June.
Text 3
M: Why haven’t you been at work this past week? Is everything OK?
W: Well, the doctor says it is the flu, so I can give it to others very easily right now. All I can do is take medicine and take a rest now. Then I can go back to work.
Text 4
M: When will you get your work done? I really wanted to make it to that movie tonight.
W: I’m not sure. I have to finish this report for my boss. I’ll call you as soon as I leave work.
Text 5
M: Being a homeowner is a lot of extra work. We have to clean the inside and outside of the house. I hardly have any time for myself these days.
W: Wait until we have kids. Then you’ll really know what work is!
Text 6
M: Do you like to travel, Mary?
W: I absolutely love it.
M: Me too. Being in other cultures, meeting new people, seeing new sites — it’s the best!
W: My favorite part of traveling is eating.
M: Really? Normally, you watch your diet very carefully.
W: Yes, but when traveling, food is such an important part of getting to know a culture. Can you imagine going to Italy without tasting a pizza, or to Belgium without eating loads of chocolate?
M: Plus, eating is an easy icebreaker when it comes to meeting local people. People take pride in their local dishes and love to talk about them.
W: I can’t agree more. Although I don’t like to cook, I would love to try to cook the delicious food for you right now.
M: Great.
Text 7
W: I’m happy to hear about your friend’s wedding, sir. For your jacket, would you like a more traditional three-button or a modern two-button?
M: Let’s go with a two-button. I’m not as slim as I used to be, you know.
W: No problem, sir. And for your shirt? Would you like your shirt to show past your jacket sleeves? If so, we’ll have to adjust the sleeve length of the jacket by a half of an inch.
M: Sure, let’s do that. I think it makes me look more modern.
W: I completely agree. And at least this will work for anniversary parties and business events as well.
Text 8
M: Katherine, I need some advice. I’ve been invited to a backyard barbecue at a classmate’s house, and I’m not sure what to expect.
W: That’s great, Lee! It will be a great chance for you to meet new people. What would you like to know?
M: I don’t know… What should I bring? What should I wear? He told me not to worry about food, and people will eat standing up and moving around.
W: Oh, cool! Well, you shouldn’t have to worry about table manners, then. You won’t sit at table. Does he have a pool?
M: Yeah, he said there will probably be some swimming.
W: OK, so wear your swim shorts and a T-shirt. That way, if you don’t want to swim, you’ll look like everyone else, and if you do, you’re already prepared.
M: Anything else I should bring?
W: Some beer, or if you don’t drink, then maybe some potato chips. You’ll see the snack table when you get there.
M: Thanks. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Text 9
W: Hello. Are you flying to St. Martin today?
M: Yes, I have my passport here.
W: Great. I’ll need to see your ticket as well.
M: I have an e-ticket. Uh...is this what you need?
W: Actually, I just need your full name so I can find you in the computer.
M: Oh, okay. It’s Bates, Frank Bates.
W: Great. Here we are. Oh, you’re traveling with a small child today.
M: Yes, my daughter Mia. She’s 14 months old.
W: Okay. I’ll need to see your daughter’s birth certificate to prove that she is under two years of age.
M: Here you are. Say, would we be able to get a seat next to the walkway?
W: Sure. I’ll put you near the washroom.
M: Thanks. Can I take my baby carriage to the gate?
W: Yes, we’ll check it in the over-sized luggage after you board. Are you just checking these two bags?
M: Yes, I’ll take my backpack as my carry-on.
W: Okay. Here is your boarding pass. Be at the gate one hour before the boarding time. You will be able to board early because you are traveling with a small child. Our flight crew will have some special instructions for take-off and landing.
Text 10
Some people say the higher you climb, the harder you fall. But those people probably would not be rock climbers. About nine million people go rock climbing in the United States. Millions more take part in the activity around the world. Some do it just for personal satisfaction. Others compete. Rock climbing can be dangerous. But there are a lot of methods and equipment that can increase a climber’s safety. Climbing takes strength, control, and good balance. Climbers have to pull themselves straight up the face of very high rocks or walls. So they have to be strong enough to carry their own weight. And climbers sometimes have to hold on to rocks by only their fingers or toes. There are several kinds of rock climbing. Traditional rock climbing is done outside. Climbers wear ropes and attach equipment to the rocks. They also connect their ropes to the equipment. If a climber slips, a rope can stop him from falling. Sport climbing is similar. However, in that sport, the safety equipment is permanently placed in the rock. There is also indoor climbing. Rock walls made of wood or concrete have places for the climber’s hands and feet. Climbers use their legs to climb; arms and hands are for position and balance. People almost always climb in groups of two or more. Climbing alone is very dangerous. Expert rock climbers say only the very best in the sport should do it.
