1.
800-pound gorilla
The phrase is rooted in a joke riddle:
--"Where does an 800-lb. gorilla sit?"
The answer:
--"Anywhere it wants to."
This highlights the disparity of power between the "800-lb. gorilla" and everything else.
The term can describe a powerful geopolitical and military force, or, in business, a powerful corporate entity that has such a large majority percentage of whatever market they compete within that they can use that strength to crush would-be competitors. (The metaphor includes an inherent bit of hyperbole; the highest weight yet recorded for an actual obese gorilla is 600 lb. (270 kg). The average weight is 400 lb.)
The metaphor has been mixed, on occasion, with the metaphor of the elephant in the room.
例句:
In the software industry, Microsoft would be considered the
800-pound gorilla.
Every time I see a snake, even in a zoo, I get goose bumps all
over.
Just
seeing her picture in a magazine gives me goose bumps - she's such
a beautiful woman.
3. sitting duck
With their bullets all gone, the soldiers were sitting ducks for
the enemy.
4. like a duck to water
注意,不能把“如鱼得水”直接说成 “like a fish in water”。英语里没有这个表达,只能用“like a duck to water”。
例句:
She's a natural at tennis and learnt very quickly, like a
duck to water.
5. chicken feed
I turned down the job at the hamburger restaurant. They only pay
chicken feed - not even enough money to pay my
rent.
The man is so incompetent we'd like to fire him. But he has good
political connections so we sent him to our turkey farm out in
Denver where he can't cause much damage.
7. when pigs fly
He'll win a match when pigs
fly.
8. serve as a guinea pig
Students in fifty schools are to act as guinea pigs for
these new teaching
methods.
9. cast pearls before swine
To sing for them is to cast pearls before
swine.
10. white elephant
When he planned to sell his house, his expensive furniture
became white elephants.
