devil 是路西法，lucifer ，是撒旦，Santa，还是Beelzebub别西卜,在英语的世界里。只怕是devil的运用比angel还多。太多的故事太多的传说。因此有很多让我们觉得莫名其妙的devil。现在让我们做一总结。

关于devil的俗语总结：

The devil’s advocate 故意唱反调的人

Lucky devil 非常幸运的人

Has the luck of the devil 有运气

Devil may care attitude 非常粗心大意，有着鬼才会保佑他的作风

下面是我做的半译文：

I have the annoying habit, when talking to other people, of playing the devil’s advocate.故意唱反调的人 So, even if I agree with what someone is saying, I often take up the opposite point of view. I like arguing and sometimes this is the only way to get a good discussion going.

就是说，为了让讨论继续下去，我只能总是采用反面的观点和别人说话。

Someone who is lucky devil is extraordinarily lucky and has the luck of the devil. If this person is also reckless, he or she has a devil may care attitude.

Lucky devil就是指非常幸运的人，我们也可以说某人有 the luck of the devil。

如果这个人还相当的粗心大意，我们可以说TA有devil may care attitude，多形象：有着鬼才会保佑他的作风呢。哈哈

When we work very hard we work like the devil and if the job is very difficult we say, it was the devil of a job or, we had the devil of a time doing it.

当我们工作非常努力辛苦时候我们就 work like the devil，如果这份工作还非常困难的说，那就是一份 the devil of a job，看来在老外眼里，devil的工作也不容易啊。或者说去你鬼的工作。我们的时间就是 the devil of a time 才能完成。由此我们可以看出，其实devil是一种极致的意思，表程度。

People say it is “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t”.

这里有一句谚语，这句话的意思是跟你认识的人打交道，即使他们不怎么理想，好过跟你完全不认识的人打交道要好。这句话不仅适用于人，也在说事。有个成语叫隔行如隔山，还有个成语叫知人知面不知心，大概讲的就是这个。

这两句话的意思都是进退维谷的意思，就是前有狼后有虎的意思。哈哈。前面是魔鬼后面是大海。

“The devil finds work for idle hands” 麻烦总是找上那些无所事事的人，一般是老妈用来说教的话。is what your mother says to you when she finds you watching television, rather than doing your homework! She means that when people don’t have enough to do, they are more likely to get into trouble or involved with crime.

If you are sitting speaking with some colleagues about some absent friend and he or she suddenly appears, you could say: “Speak of the devil!”说曹操曹操到 This is normally an affectionate and humorous greeting but if you tell someone to “go to the devil!”见鬼去吧，滚开吧。 you are telling them to go away and leave you alone.
 
The devil goes under various names such as Lucifer路西法, Satan撒旦 or Beelzebub别西卜. Lucifer actually translates from Latin as “bringer of light” and the devil was an archangel before he was cast out of heaven for leading a revolt of angels. Interestingly Lucifer is also another word for match, although it is rarely used. Another term for the devil I like is Old Nick, which comes from the German word goblin. Even better is Old Scratch, which I discovered whilst doing research for this blog, and comes from the Old Norse word for goblin.
魔鬼有很多化名，例如路西法，撒旦还有别西卜。路西法翻译回拉丁语其实是领馆守护者的意思，他在被驱逐出天堂之前其实是一个大天使，因为他带领天使造反而被逐。有趣的是，Lucifer也是火柴的另一种说法，虽然很少用。

另一个我喜欢的关于devil的词是 Old Dick，源自德国词 goblin小妖精。一种更好的说法是 Old Scratch，这是在我写这篇博客的时候搜到的词，来源于古斯堪的那维亚语。
The devil is reputed to have the best tunes. In the famous song “Cross Roads Blues”, written by Robert Johnson in 1936, a man sells his soul to the devil in exchange for becoming a famous blues singer. He arranges to meet the devil at midnight at a cross roads and, whilst this is an extraordinary powerful story, it also reflects the real fear many African Americans felt if they were out after dark. In many parts of the South lynching was common and there was real danger from white vigilantes. For many rock musicians Robert Johnson is the godfather of modern rock music and “Cross Roads Blues” has been covered by dozens of bands.

In Europe the classic tale of a man selling his soul to the devil is Faust.浮士德 It was popular in Germany and it became an obsession痴迷 to the writer Goethe歌德. He wrote an epic drama based on the folk tale that remains a German classic to this day. In the UK, a contemporary of William Shakespeare, called Christopher Marlowe, wrote the play “Dr Faustus”. In both versions Faustus is tricked by the devil into surrendering his soul in exchange for earthly 尘世的pleasures. Of course the devil makes sure these pleasures don’t work out as Faustus had planned them. If someone sacrifices ideals, principles or friendships for a better paid job or a more prestigious 享有声望的position we would say he or she had sold his or her soul to the devil.

因此，如果有人见利忘义，我们就说，他sold his or her soul to the devil。把灵魂卖给了魔鬼

“Judy sold her soul when she took that job in advertising. She always used to say she was a serious artist, who would never sell out to big business.”
