Step One: Lead in the new lesson

Get the students to listen to the song of Beijing Olympic Games: You and me and enjoy some pictures of Beijing Olympic Games to boost students’ interest in the Olympic Games. Then ask them three questions.

1. When and where did the ancient Olympic Games start?

2. Who was China’s first gold winner and for what event?

3. What are the three words that show the spirit of the Olympic Games?

Step Two: Ask students to discuss the reading goals and reading strategies that they have chosen in groups.

The reading goals:

1. Master some new and technical vocabulary used for sports.

2. Learn about Olympic Games and the differences and similarities between ancient Olympics and modern Olympics.

3. Use the reading strategies to improve the ability of reading, such as prediction, skimming, scanning and guessing new words.

4. Improve the ability of language communication to talk about sports topic.

The reading strategies: predicting, skimming, scanning, inferring unknown vocabulary, inferring and summarizing, identifying sentence structure.

Step Three: Ask students to read autonomously and raise questions

During the course of the reading, the teacher offers the following outline to train reading strategies and encourages students to raise questions.

1. Predicting:

Look at the title and the pictures and predict the content of the text.

2. Skimming:

(1) What are Pausanias and Li Yan mainly talking about in the interview?

(2) Divide the whole article into two parts and find out the main idea of each part.

3. Scanning:

(1)What amazes Pauasnias about the Olympic Games?

(2)How often is the winter Olympics held?

(3) What events can not be competed in the Summer Olympics?

(4)Find out the differences and similarities of the ancient and modern Olympics. (Fill in the following table)

4. Inferring unknown vocabulary: infer the underlined words or phrases.

(1) There are two main sets of Games—the Winter and Summer Olympics, and both are held every four years on a regular basis.

(2) Only athletes who have reached the agreed standard for their event will be admitted as competitors.

(3) Does anyone want to host the Olympic Games?

5. Identifying sentence structure:

(1) There’s as much competition among countries to host the Olympics as to win Olympic medals.

(2) For each Olympics, a special village is built for them to live in, a main reception building, several stadiums for competitions, and a gymnasium as well.

Step Four: Ask students to explore questions autonomously in groups

After reading autonomously, students discuss the questions that members of the group raise and settle some individual questions in groups. The teacher guides students to solve some common questions with the whole class.

The common questions that students raised

1. What amazes Pauasnias about the Olympic Games? Most students can’t find all the details about this question completely

2. What events can not be competed in the Summer Olympics? Most students can’t find the detail correctly.

3. There are two main sets of Games—the Winter and Summer Olympics, and both are held every four years on a regular basis. (Most students can’t understand the underlined phrase)

Explain: The underlined words are a phrase which is useful and often used in spoken and written English. If something is held every four years, then it is held regularly. So “on a regular basis” means the same as “regularly”

4. There’s as much competition among countries to host the Olympics as to win Olympic medals. (Most students don’t understand the phrase “as much--- as”)

1as much---as表示------------同一程度。

It is as much as our responsibility to educate the child as yours. 教育这个孩子是你们的责任,同样也是我们的责任。

2as--- as--- “表示------一样------”

1He is as tall as his brother.

2)当 as---as---的结构后面连接 can / any / ever / possible / 等词时,表示最高级的意思,可译为极其,最好或尽量。例:

This is as fair a land as ever. 这是一片最美的土地。

It was as much as he could do to help us. 他尽了最大力量帮助我们。

3)当 as---as---结构后面表示重量、数量、时间、距离等计量名词时,相当于up to,表示程度,可译为达到------”。例:
