Shaking Hands Properly

Miranda was getting ready for an afternoon barbecue at her boss's home. Her boss, Mr. Thompson, had invited Miranda, her co-worker, and their families to come. "Please bring your son, Miranda," said Mr. Thompson. "I'd like to meet him."
Miranda was concerned about introducing Jason to Mr. Thompson. Jason was a typical teenager. He had a different style of communication. Jason didn't say, "Hello. How are you?" Instead, he said, "Hey, dude. What's up?"
Of course, Miranda didn't want Mr. Thompson to think Jason was disrespectful. So she had a long talk with her son before the left. She reminded him about the proper way to shake hands. "When I introduce you to Mr. Thompson, please do not wave at him. Do not nod your head at him. And please do not pound your fist at him the way you do with your friends."
"Okay, Mom," said Jason. "I understand. I won't do any of those things."
At 3:00 P.M., Miranda and Jason arrived at Mr. Thompson's home. They walked inside, and Mr. Thompson greeted them warmly. Jason shook hands very properly with Mr. Thompson and said, "I'm very pleased to meet you, sir."
"I'm glad to finally meet you, too, Jason," said Mr. Thompson. "Tell me about yourself."
"Well, sir, I'm sixteen years old. And I play basketball on my high school team."
"Basketball? I played basketball in high school, too," said Mr. Thompson. "Give me a high-five!"
