III: Reading

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) — Simply increasing physical activity levels alone is unlikely to reduce body weight in young children, and therefore will probably not prevent obesity (肥胖), although it may set the stage for a healthier lifestyle, the results of a study conducted in Scotland suggest.

Instead, a combination of increased physical activity and other lifestyle changes like sticking to a healthy diet may be needed to stop the trend of obesity.

“Many children are obese, even at preschool age,” Dr John J. Reilly from the University of Glasgow and his colleagues note in the British Medical Journal. Considering the general lack of evidence on proper ways to prevent obesity in this age group, Reilly’s team had 545 children from 36 nursery schools in the “Movement and Activity Glasgow Intervention (干预) in Children” or MAGIC trial.

The trial was specifically designed to see if an increase in activity could reduce body mass index (身体质量指数). Each week for 24 weeks roughly half of the preschoolers, who were an average of 4.2 years old, participated in three 30-minute active workouts while at nursery school and their parents were encouraged to increase the child’s activity levels at home. The other half of the children, serving as controls (对照), followed their usual nursery school schedule.

According to the researchers, the physical activity intervention had no significant effect on body mass index of the children.

However, compared with control children, intervention children show greater gains in body  movement skills, which, the researchers say, may increase confidence in physical ability, perhaps increasing the opportunities of future participation in physical activity or sports.

In a word, Reilly and his colleagues suggest that “successful interventions to prevent obesity in early childhood may require changes not just at nursery, school, and home, but in the wider environment. Changes in other behaviors, including diet, may also be necessary.”

The Buzz

       10345 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale              (480) 991-3866

The Buzz is a favorite among underage college students. The club, within a shopping center, has two levels. The downstairs is for everyone, while the upstairs is only on Friday and Saturday. Though it’s intended for the youth, it’s a wide age range.

Devil House

       829 S. Rural Rd., Tempe                                   (480)517-1188

There really isn’t a ton to say about the Devil House. It’s located right near the crossing of Rural and University, making it an easy walk on foot. It’s a simple bar, not so expensive, not so big and not so concerned with anything other than offering beer drinkers and sports fans a homey place to meet up.

Northern Lounge

       5008 W. Northern Ave., Glendale                (623)937-0940

This bar is all about action and activity. You’re welcome, of course, to sit around and drink but it’s hard just to sit and drink. You’ll come soon on stage for live music. It’s a fun, interactive atmosphere and their karaoke nights have been popular on the west side for quite a while.

Casey Moore’s

       850 S. Ash Ave., Tempe                             (480)968-9935

Casey Moore’s is really everything a college bar should be: comfortable, fun, reasonably-priced and close to campus. The outside is pretty big and has plenty of tables, while inside is darker and equally comfortable and a big bar for sitting and chatting.

The World Is Getting Smaller

Imagine this: a television screen the size and thickness of a piece of paper. You carry it around in your pocket and take it out when you want to watch a show. Imagine a guitar so tiny you can’t see it with the human eye, but you can hear sounds when its strings are plucked(拨). Some people say the future is big, but when it comes to technology, the world is getting smaller.

Nanotechnology(纳米技术) is the science that deals with doing things in a very small way, and it is being explored and developed all over the globe. Micromachines too small to be seen by the human eye are being designed to do many things that larger machines do today. And these machines, no longer in diameter(直径)than a human hair, are extremely powerful. Many scientists say nanotechnology will produce the next industrial revolution.

Maybe the area where nanotechnology will have the biggest impact is medical science. Imagine nanobots in medicine. Thousands or even millions of tiny machines can be sent into the human body with specific missions. For example, they can be designed to find and destroy cancer cells or viruses. Other machines may stay in the human body permanently to help organs that are not functioning properly.

Think of the possibilities in using such tiny machines in surgery. Imagine machines so small you can swallow them in a pill or inject them into your bloodstream through a needle. After you’ve had too many years of junk food, these tiny robots could be sent into your arteries(动脉)to clean them. An intelligent machine in your heart would look around to find the problem and then repair it. If you needed an operation, it would be almost like swallowing the surgeon.

When could all of this happen? Scientists predict that much of this is possible in the next 30 years. After all, when your grandparents were young, they would have laughed if someone told them a person could walk on the moon. Thousands of scientists around the world are working on these micromachines. Nanotechnology is just around the corner.

64. Paragraph 2 mainly discusses ____________.

       A. nanotechnology                                    B. human eye

C. large machines                                      D. human hair

65. According to the passage, the tiny medical instruments ___________.

A. can stay in human body and cure the diseases

B. are too small to be repaired

C. may not function well in human body

D. can also be used to send human onto the moon

66. The phrase “just around the corner” in the last sentence means “___________”.

A. in the distance                                            B. right under your notice

C. likely to happen soon                             D. beyond all imagination

Located on the north-eastern coast of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef stretches over 2,000 kilometers and covers an area of some 348,700 square kilometers. It is a site of remarkable variety and beauty, and is often known as a great natural wonder of the world.

The Great Barrier Reef has been constructed by simple marine animals called corals (珊瑚虫) over thousands of years. Contrary to popular belief, however, the Great Barrier Reef is not a continuous reef, but a group of nearly 3,000 coral reefs that have been growing for a long time. The Great Barrie Reef is no doubt the world’s most extensive stretch of coral reefs. They are of all sizes and shapes. Ranging from less than one hectare(公顷) to more than 100,000 hectares, these reefs provide the most spectacular(壮观的)marine scenery on Earth.

One must also realize that the Great Barrier Reef contains more than just coral reefs. It is probably the world’s richest area in terms of biological diversity, displaying the maturity of an ecosystem which has evolved(变体)over the years. The Great Barrier Reef provides habitats for various forms of marine life. There are over 1,500 species of fish, about 400 species of corals, and 200 species of birds. As the habitat of endangered species such as the dugong (儒艮) and the large green turtle, it also holds great scientific interest. Given severe pressures being placed on these species elsewhere, the Great Barrier Reef may be their last secure stronghold.

In 1981, the great Barrier Reef was added to the UNESCO’S World Heritage List. Now it has become a very popular tourist destination. There are approximately two million visitors to the Great Barrier Reef each year. The area offers visitors a variety of activities including water sports and birdwatching. Over the years, however, the Great Barrier Reef has been faced with many environmental threats such as oil pollution, overfishing, decreased water quality and global warming. In 1975, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park was established with the purpose of protecting the area’s biological diversity while providing for reasonable use, including tourism, fishing, boating, diving and research. The park authority has zoned the area in order to decide which activities are allowed in each zone.
