Dear U. S. Embassy Officer:
Mr. xxx is a Chinese student who will be matriculating at the University of Chicago in September 20xx. His interest in Sociology is accommodated under the auspices of our Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences( MAPSS) which gives broad training in Social Sciences disciplines as well as allowing for a concentration in a particular sub-discipline. MAPSS is an ideal environment in which Mr. Hu’s interest in the interplay of politics, media, education, and individual ideology may be explored. In addition to taking an overview course (“Perspectives”) that will give him general training in approaches used in addressing issues and problems faced by contemporary social scientists, he will take a methods course (typically Statistics) and will spend the remainder of his program, a further seven courses, developing his skills in Sociology as well as working with a Sociology preceptor (an advanced Ph. D. student in the field) in the preparation of this Master’s thesis.
This is not a typical M.A. program, but one that has been very successful here for over seventy –five years and is now emulated at other universities in the U. S. Additional information about MAPSS is readily available online at http://mapss.uchicago.edu and can be provided by telephone, if necessary, with a call to either number shown above.
I urge you to approve Mr. XX’s F-1 student visa. He is among the top third of our entering students this year. His talents and cultural perspectives will make him a valuable member of the incoming class and will allow him, upon graduation, to pursue future academic and professional goals with sterling credentials.
Sincerely,
Tim Blackman
Associate Dean of Students
