1958年3月，《美国生活》杂志发表了一篇有关美国教育体系危机的大块文章。以两个高中学生为例-莫斯科的Alexei
Kutskov和芝加哥的Stephen Lapekas。该杂志的记者们花了一个月的时间跟着他们，看着他们学习，感兴趣的东西，阅读的东西以及下课后的时间。
研究结果震惊了美国。阿列克谢（Alexey）和史蒂芬（Stephen）年龄相同，都是16岁，但阿列克谢（Alexey）在教育方面远远领先于美国人。在文章中发布的图片中，读者可以看到Alexei如何进行物理和化学课程的实验，打排球和下棋，阅读莎士比亚，进行短途旅行和制作音乐。阿列克谢将大部分时间用于学习，他对上大学很认真，并坚信自己的未来命运取决于此。
