5月11日下午2点左右，航空母舰遭到三架 “零”式战斗机袭击。第一架A6M战斗机从低云中出现，飞入起飞甲板并投下一枚重达250磅的炸弹，向甲板射击，摧毁装满燃料的飞机，导致船上发生大火，撞击航空母舰并坠入大海。

第二架零式战斗机坠毁在这艘航空母舰的驾驶舱上，摧毁了美国飞机。它的残骸从甲板上滑落并坠入大海：

小川少尉驾驶的第三架零式战斗机穿过了防空火力，将250公斤炸弹扔到了甲板上，然后在航母的舰桥附近坠毁。炸弹击中了起飞甲板并爆炸了。
