斯堪的纳维亚半岛分散数以千计刻有铭文的石头，特别是在瑞典乌普兰省。瑞典大多数幸存的符文可以追溯到维京时代或公元11世纪。

Runestones主要用作纪念已故亲属，朋友或亲人。主要刻有纪念死者的名字，使用了16个字符以及蛇和其他生物的图片，较旧的石刻有神秘的形状，线条和象形图。今天瑞典仍然有大约2500个Runestones。
