当埃洛伊·阿尔法罗将军于1895年任职厄瓜多尔总统时，他立即宣布在沿海城市瓜亚基尔和首都基多之间建设一条新的铁路线。由于山区地理位置困难，项目复杂，许多反对者立即出现。当时许多人认为铁路无法征服安第斯山脉。尽管有抗议，阿尔法罗将军还是聘请了几位美国承包商，承担创建“世界上最困难的铁路”的任务，于1899年开工。

在山区建造铁路并非易事。频繁的地震，暴雨，美洲虎，毒蛇，疟疾，痢疾和黄热病延缓了修建过程。该铁路线被称为魔鬼的鼻子（Nariz德尔暗黑），为了克服800米高的悬崖，工程师们切割了一系列陡峭的山坡，以减轻下降和上升。

铁路沿着魔鬼鼻子的垂直方向穿过一个狭窄的台阶。当火车通过其中一个下降台阶时，开车的人员跳下机车并切换导轨，使火车继续移动到下一个狭窄的檐口。因此，火车从屋檐移动到檐口，逐渐克服下降。毫无疑问，魔鬼的鼻子被列入世界上最危险的铁路之列。

当地人认为魔鬼的鼻子被撒旦诅咒，他们反对在这个地方建造任何道路。当铁路建设结束时，已有2000多名工人死于疾病，严峻的工作条件和气候。主要受害者是来自加勒比地区英国殖民地的工人，以及来自牙买加的数百名囚犯。
