1943年秋，美国提请斯大林允许美空军重型轰炸机飞越苏联领土轰炸德国东部和巴尔干目标，免于长途返回英国或意大利。1944年初，苏联已分配给位于乌克兰和波尔塔瓦地区三个飞机场：波尔塔瓦，米尔哥罗德和Piryatin（特殊用途的169空军基地）。机场由苏联提供防空与航空保障，一切都按最高级别组织的。
德国空军随后于1944年6月22日，晚上对波尔塔瓦和米尔哥罗德机场美国轰炸机进行袭击。
尽管苏联采取分散飞机的努力，并在机场提供强大的防空火力和盖机场夜间战斗机，但德国人造成的伤害显著：摧毁44架B-17，2
架P-47 - 2和1'架闪电“损坏：25架 B-17， 15架牦牛9 6 7架牦牛1架”飓风“和3
架U-2。烧了300吨汽油，摧毁了2000多架空中炸弹。1名美国人死亡，15人受伤，炸死
31人，
“Frantik”行动是美国军用飞机在苏联境内部署的一个独特案例。
