刘易斯海因是一位美国摄影师，他用照片将童工的现状反映给美国当局。他是社会问题摄影的发现者和教父。在他年轻的时候，刘易斯在家具厂工作了一段时间，在芝加哥，纽约和哥伦比亚大学学习。1903年，刘易斯在纽约参加植物学和自然研究课程时，他得到了一个用于记录教育过程和学生活动的相机。1905年，Hine开始创作一系列纪录片作品，其主题是移民到埃利斯岛。1908年，他接受了全国童工委员会的委派，并成为他们的工作人员和摄影师。此后的八年，刘易斯海因前往美国各地，并记录了有关的违反劳动法与儿童有关的情况。他访问工厂和记录工作条件，记录孩子的名字和他们的年龄，他用相机纠正了所纪录的违规行为。
他的照片和所谓的田野笔记帮助全国童工委员会证明了当前儿童的困境以及他们恶劣的工作条件。第一次世界大战期间和之后，刘易斯海恩用自己的摄影作品提供援助欧洲工作的意义。
在二十世纪二十年代和三十年代初，海因制作了一系列强调人类对现代工业发展的贡献的“工作肖像”。1930年，海因拍摄了帝国大厦的建设。为了获得最佳的效果，海因拍摄时坐在一个特别的篮子里悬挂在第五大道1000英尺以上高的地方。在他的作品中，海因总是试图表现劳动的尊严，工作人的尊严。他说这些人就像他们那个时代的英雄，国家应该高度认识他们的价值。
刘易斯·海因在摄影史创造了一种新的优秀摄影艺术，这就是社会纪录摄影。海因在他的有生之年得到了承认，他在全美国巡回工作没有一分钟停顿，他被称为艺术永恒的人文主义者。他的照片是诚实的，人性化和正直的。精心制作的独特作品，使我们能够看到并感受到美国劳动人民在大萧条之前所经历的一切，成为他们情绪的调色板。
