本杰明李史密斯是一位英国旅行家。1880年，史密斯试图抵达格陵兰岛东部的海岸，但徒劳无功。在弗朗茨约瑟夫土地的西边，他发现了许多岛屿和一个不知名的好港湾。1881年，史密斯开始了一次新的旅程，前往弗朗茨约瑟夫土地，在佛罗里达角开始越冬，并在1882年乘船返回新大陆。2017年8月，史密斯号沉船在20米深的研究船“Alter Ego”上被科学考察队发现。
