西奈沙漠中寻求和平

在第二次世界大战期间，盟国在叙利亚，埃及和巴勒斯坦组织难民营，帮助欧洲人逃离战争。当东欧和巴尔干半岛鏖战时，成千上万的难民为了寻求安全而穿越地中海。
1942年为了帮助流离失所者，英国成立了中东救济组织和难民局（MERRA ） 在埃及，加沙和阿勒颇，为那里4个万多欧洲人提供了住房。成千上万的南斯拉夫人定居在苏伊士运河南端附近的El Shatt营地。沙漠中的生活是严酷的。按照惯例，难民营的居民每天都得到军队配给量的一半。许多人继续从事专业工作，例如老师，护士，木匠，鞋匠和裁缝师。没有职业的人从事清洁，洗涤，帮助烹饪。1946年战争结束后，这些营地解散了。
