1870年5月，Thomas Child被皇家海事海关服务公司雇用，成为北京的燃气工程师。这位29岁的英国人离开了他的妻子和三个孩子，成为大约100名生活在清末首都的外国人之一。在接下来的20年里，他拍摄了大约200张照片，收集了中国最后一个皇朝时期完整的习俗，建筑和人物。

圆明园是一座花园和宫殿建筑群，位于紫禁城西北8公里处。它是1709年由康熙皇帝建造的。1860年，第二次鸦片战争结束时，大部分元明元遭到英国和法国的摧毁。
