1904年，毛里塔尼亚号的龙骨在斯万·亨特船厂铺下。同约翰·布朗船厂一样，这家船厂也曾经为大英帝国建造了很多战舰。毛里塔尼亚号1906年9月下水。1907年9月，在试航中达到了27节的高速。同年11月16日进行处女航。作为一个开创性的尝试，卢西塔尼亚号和毛里塔尼亚号首次使用蒸汽轮机代替往复式蒸汽机。这为它们创下新的速度记录创造了条件。1907年，毛里塔尼亚号以23.7节的平均速度，从姐妹船卢西塔尼亚号手里把蓝飘带奖接了过来。并且把横渡大西洋的速度纪录逐年提高，最终达到26.6节的高速。直到1929年，这个纪录才被德国的不莱梅号邮船打破。那个时候，毛里塔尼亚号不仅是大西洋上最快的船，而且也是最豪华的船。大量地使用麻栗木、柚木、黄铜和镀金装饰，反映了那个时期崇尚浮华虚荣的社会风尚。【来源网络】
