The History, Department of Anthropology
Department of Archaeology and Anthropology was founded in April
1961 under the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, marking the
first time that anthropology was taught in a higher educational
institution in Korea.
Even though the department started with only one full-time
professor, Won-Yong Kim, who specialized in archaeology, it offered
several cultural anthropology courses. At that time, about 10
students entered the department every year.
In 1967, Professor Sang-Bok Han (specializing in economic
anthropology) became a full-time professor after serving as a
lecturer since 1964. In 1973, the department began offering a
master's degree program.
In 1975, the department was divided into two programs: Department
of Anthropology under the College of Social Sciences and Department
of Archaeology under the College of Humanities. At this time,
Professor Kwang-Kyu Lee (specializing in ethnology), who was with
the Department of Educational Science, College of Education, joined
the Department of Anthropology as an associate professor. Professor
Sang-Bok Han who was with the Department of Archaeology and
Anthropology also became an assistant professor of the new
department.
The Department of Anthropology now stood alone as an independent
entity, contributing to the growth of the department. In addition,
the department's professors, graduate students and alumni founded
the Association of Anthropological Studies, which began publishing
the Journal of Anthropological Research. In 1976, the department
demonstrated its development of educational quality by conferring
its first master's degrees to two students.
In the next eight years, the department added four more professors
to broaden its academic subfields: Professor Mun-Woong Lee
(specializing in cultural change) in 1977; Professor Kwang-Ok Kim
(political anthropology) in 1980; Professor Kyung-Soo Chun
(specializing in ecological anthropology) in 1982; and Professor
Hahn-Sok Wang (specializing in linguistic anthropology) in 1985.
With its expanded faculty, the department turned its focus to the
study of other cultures.
Since 1981, 28 undergraduate students have entered the department
every year. In 1982, the department began offering a doctoral
program. In November 1990, the Institute of Cross-Cultural Studies
was founded under the College of Social Sciences. The Institute has
offered symposiums, colloquiums and workshops to further
cross-cultural understanding and enriched the department.
In 1994, Professor Myung-Suk Oh (specializing in economic
anthropology and Southeast Asia) became a joint professor with the
department and the Institute of Area Studies. In 1998, Professor
Kwang-Kyu LEE retired and Professor Jeong-Won Kang (specializing in
folklore) joined the department in 1999. Professor Sang-Bok Han
retired in 2000. In 2001, Professor Ik-joo Hwang (specializing in
urban anthropology) joined the department and the 40th anniversary
of Department's foundation was held. Professor Sunyoung Park joined
the department in 2002 and Professor Hyang-Jin Jung joined the
department in 2003. In 2006, Professor Mun-Woong Lee retired and
Professor Sug-In Kweon joined the department.

Introduction
The goal of this department is to help students
understand Korean and global cultures from prehistoric to modern
times and to provide them with the knowledge that they need to
practice in society.
The Department of Cultural Anthropology includes academic studies
of archeology, folklore and social anthropology, and it makes
on-site investigations and deepens the methodological perspective
that becomes a critical guideline for identifying the meaning of
the diversity that exists throughout the lifestyles of mankind and
the world in life in general.
First, in archeology, students learn to investigate, excavate and
restore different types of artifacts and also study analyzing
methods for excavated artifacts in order to possess the ability to
conduct research by interconnecting the history and culture of
people in the past. In Folklore, students learn to recognize the
features of Korean cultures by studying how Korean cultural
traditions are formed and created through daily habits and seasonal
habits, folk religion, material culture and technologies, cultural
sceneries of village societies, as well as through passing down of
traditions.
In social anthropology, comparative research is made on societies
around the world for deeper understanding of social organizations
such as families and relatives, as well as for European and Asian
cultures and society, cities and economy, and culture and human
nature, so that students can identify the common traits and
differences of cultures.
These three academic fields aim at comprehensiveness relationships
among different academic fields, which are not in any other one
subject of study.
In response to the recent dynamic multi-cultural era, the many
different social fields are showing great interest in cultural
anthropology. Above all else, in the case of Korea, there has been
a rapidly increasing need to foster experts and human resources
with capabilities and knowledge on the culture of different nations
and cultural properties due to the trends of time in which the
economy is developing, companies entering overseas markets,
decentralization, enhanced quality of life through culture and
multi-national races living together. Furthermore, there has been
an explosive increase in investigations of prehistoric and historic
remains due to national development, and there is a growing social
demand for archaeologists.
In response to this, this Department is greatly increasing
opportunities for graduates to find employment in museums, overseas
companies, universities, public and private institutions related to
cultural properties and in the press. Therefore, future prospects
for this field are quite high as well.

Department of Archaeology and Cultural Anthropology
Our department is
In the twenty-first century, culture plays an important role not
only in everyday life but also in the economy and society. Our
major is also rapidly expanding its role in Korea. The study of
culture and its application in prehistoric and contemporary
societies are the main topics of our department.
Our department deals with two topics: Archaeology and Cultural
Anthropology. Archaeology focuses on prehistoric culture and
peoples while Cultural Anthropology focuses mainly on contemporary
cultures and peoples. Our department provides students with many
useful courses to enhance their intellectual ability and practical
knowledge through intensive training programs. Special disciplinary
courses and programs enrich students with both theoretical and
practical learning, giving the curriculum a distinctive feel.
Furthermore, this major offers not only courses about prehistoric
and contemporary cultures and peoples, but also many applied
courses about cultural heritage and its management, museum and
cultural display, event organization and management, cultural
tourism, and cultural industries.
What do I study
The subjects studied by students in the various levels are as
follows. First year students learn the basics of both archaeology
and cultural anthropology. The courses include Understanding of
Culture, Understanding of Archaeology, Understanding of
Contemporary Culture, etc. Second year students learn intermediary
topics and take classes such as Prehistoric Culture, History of
Archaeology, Museum, Theory of Culture, etc. Third year students
learn advanced topics and take such classes as Methods of Cultural
Studies, Methods for Archaeology, Civilizations, Tourism, etc.
These courses give students an insight into diverse aspects of
societies and cultures. Fourth year students undertake more applied
courses such as Cultural Policy, Cultural Heritage, Application of
Traditional Culture, etc.
What can I do afterwards
Since culture plays an important role in society, the number of
fields our graduates can enter is expanding. Graduates can get a
curator certificate through the national examination board. In the
area of Educational and Research Institutes, they can become a
curator/researcher in museums and research institutes, or
professors in colleges. Graduates may also work in the cultural
industries related to cultural events, film, event management,
cultural production, tourism, etc. Since the fields that need
cultural knowledge are increasing, students have more opportunities
to choose from once they graduate.

Cultural Anthropology
Cultural Anthropology is unique in its
cross-cultural, holistic approach to understanding human
society.
The comparative and holistic viewpoints of anthropology provide a
broad context in which the cultural, historical, and environmental
forces that shape today's world can be comprehended. Anthropology
is also unique in that it approaches human phenomena first from the
actor's point of view, which is gained through long-term
participant observation and in-depth interviews.
