This April I went to America to attend a model UN meeting and discuss about intellectual property issues. On behalf of Slovakia, me and my partner were excited by the idea of being sponsors of draft resolutions, and thought a lot about how to please those leading powers so that they can join our draft.

However, during the meeting, the delegates of Cuba surprised us and even distracted us from our original goal. While the other countries were merging their drafts, Cuba insisted that America’s embargo on Cuba violated their intellectual property rights and required America to stop it immediately. They spoke so many times that it was impossible to ignore them. Eventually, America and Cuba both made some compromises and Cuba was added to the combined draft as a signatory.

  At first, I couldn’t understand Cuba coz through many efforts they only gained the position of a signatory. But gradually I realized that Cuba has made a right choice. One day some of us will be representing China in a real UN conference. At that time we should cooperate with others as well as think independently. A real harmony does not come from losing your own voice. It means the right to disagree. It means negotiating instead of forcing.
