South Korean peacekeepers head for South
Sudan mission
December 2, 2024 (JUBA) – A total of 300 South Korean troops
are destined for the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South
Sudan (UNMISS).
A release said a ceremony to dispatch the 19th batch of the
300-strong Hanbit unit to South Sudan will take place at the
International Peace Supporting Standby Force in Incheon, South
Korea on Monday.
South Korea began troop deployments to South Sudan in 2013 at
the UN’s request in accordance with a UN Security Council
resolution aimed at assisting peaceful reconstruction work.
In April, the Security Council unanimously extended the
mandate of the UNMISS until April 2025.
According to a statement, extension of the UN mandate was
based on the situation in South Sudan.
The Security Council also authorized UNMISS to use all
necessary means to carry out its task.
