Sudan
August 31, 2024 (JUBA) – Sudan has appointed a new ambassador
to South Sudan.
The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council of Sudan,
Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan appointed Essam El-Din Mohamed Karar to
replace Jamal Abdel Majid.
The new envoy traveled to South Sudan’s capital, Juba on July
31 and met South Sudan’s Foreign Affairs minister, Ramadan Abdallah
Goc in preparation for presentation of his credentials and letters
of appointment to President Salva Kiir.
Sudan’s Consul Yahya Mohamed Osman accompanied Karar to the
meeting.
Osman said the meeting was attended by the diplomatic missions
in the country.
He further said a meeting with the president will be arranged
in the coming days.
“That the ambassador will present his credentials to the
President of the Republic [of South Sudan], which will be
determined later after coordination with the relevant authorities,”
Osman told the state-owned television (SSBC) on Tuesday.
There are different ways through which ambassadors are
appointed, foreign service experts and diplomats told Sudan Tribune
in series of interviews.
Appointment of ambassadors depend on the existing political
system in place.
Ambassadors act as the diplomatic representatives of their
country abroad. In some countries, the executive arm of the
government, usually the office of the president makes the
nomination which has to be approved by the parliament.
Most ambassadors rise through foreign service to become career
diplomats.
