Part III  Reading Skill: Finding out word meanings

1. How to find out word meanings?

1) By definition (定义)

The harbor is protected by a jetty a wall built out into the water. (防波堤)

Greenhouse gases are gases in the earth’s atmosphere that collect heat and light from the sun.

2) By helping words: that is, meaning, such as, or, likewise...

Jane is indecisive, that is, she can’t make up her mind. (优柔寡断)

3) By the opposite of the word

Jane was talking with others while Eliza remained reticent all the time. (有保留的;沉默的)

4) By your own experience

The door was so low that I hit my head on the lintel. (门楣)

5) By sentences before or after the unknown words

I am a resolute man. Once I set up a goal, I won’t give it up easily. (坚定的,果断的)

Most people tend to take far more clothing than is necessary. Remember that you probably wear your favorite outfits over and over, and being abroad won’t change that. (衣服)

6) By examples

Select any of these periodicals: Times, Newsweek or Reader’s Digest. (期刊,杂志)

To buy groceries, you can go to the convenience store or the mass merchandiser such as Wal-Mart
