Objective

1. Talk about true meaning of love and family affection;

2. Convey love to family members;

3. Get a sense of how to take care of a disabled like Jimmy

Pre-class activity

Read the text twice and re-write the story in Jimmy’s tone with no less than 150 words. In the story Jimmy is supposed to include how his sister, mother, father, sister’s friends care about him. （由于是第一课，事前无法布置学生预习，恐怕难实现。）

Part I Warming-up:

1.    Funny interpretation of love

a.     L - lovely looks, gorgeous in every way.

O - orgasms, he gives you lots of them.

V - visa card, to buy you nice things.

E - educated, for good conversation.

b.     L- the way you Look at me

O- the Only one i see

V- Very extraordinary

E- Even more than anyone that you adore 

c.     Love stands for: listen; only; value; excuse

2.    Types of love

Love of people: family (family affection), relatives, strangers

Love between human beings and animals

Love between human beings and nature

3.    Watch video clip from Forrest Gump and bring along the topic of family affection

4.    What does family affection need?

a.    Quality time: spending time to get along with your family members. to know each other, listen to each other and share with them and care for them.

b.    Verbal expressions: words to make your love true, telling others how you feel about them and how much you love them,

c.    mutual Services: helping each one in family unconditionally, to increase the affection between the members

d.    affectionate touch: physical touch such as a hug, kiss, or just a patting, to help transferring the emotion and feelings between the family members.

Part II Text Understanding

1.    Quick check: Rearrange the following events according to the time sequence in the text:

A.      I alone was left to look after Jimmy.

B.      Inseparable with father, Jimmy did everything with him.

C.      With ideal gifts, my friends made Jimmy’s birthday party a success.

D.     I must take care of Jimmy wherever I went.

E. Jimmy has finally become independent physically and mentally.

F. In Jimmy’s eyes, the world changed a lot after father’s death.

2.    With the guides of the above events, retell the story in Jimmy’s Tone. Jimmy is supposed to include how his sister, mother, father, sister’s friends care about him.

(first in pairs and then pick 2-3 to present their stories before the class.)

3.    Words and expressions

1）把全班分成A、B、C三组，A组在黑板左边列出他们认为本单元最有用的名词（依次前来黑板，每人写一个）、B组在黑板中间列出最有用的动词、C组在黑板右边列出最有用的形容词和副词。

2）每个学生从A、B、C三组词中分别选择3个词造句（这句话必须包括这三个词），继续选词造句，要求学生造3-4个句子。

3) 鼓励学生把自己认为写得最好的句子写到黑板上。

4）点评，必要讲解，结束此活动。

（选词不限于单词表，更鼓励到课文中找）

4.    A group discussion: what can you do if you have a disabled brother like Jimmy? (taking the author as example)

1)    Protect him from physical attack

2)    Teach him practical things

3)    Stay and talk with him when he is sad

4)    Help him fulfill his wish

5)    Let him know people around always care about him and love him.

   ……

Part III After-class task

Make a phone call home, showing how much you love your parents and at the same time sharing with them your troubles and puzzles at college. Be sure to write down the responses and share with the classmates next week how you get strength and inspiring in this communication.

另外，第一单元的上课思路已经解决了，可第一节（I mean the first period，40m）怎么上还是茫然，由于是第四周开课，再谈暑假见闻显然已经不合适，可开篇第一节就直接上课文，我还是不太习惯，再说学生也听不下去呀，期待大家贡献一些灵感哦。
