Text A The Freedom Givers

I. Objectives:

1. grasp the main idea: civil rights struggles in the US

2. identify the structure of the text

3. prasp the key languange points and grammatical structures in the text

4. conduct a series of reading, listening, speaking and writing activities related to the unit

II. Pre-reading tasks:

1. listen to a song and note down the three people mentioned in the song

2. watch a video I have a dream by Martin Luther King

3. Ss summarize the theme in the song and movie and talk about the background information ( one item for each group: Abraham Lincoln

John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King , The Underground Railroad,

III. While-reading tasks:

1. check on the preview by the students

1) check the stuents’ work on main idea (网络自主预习作业, 纸质已上交)

2) check the stuents’ work on detailed understanding of the text (网络自主预习作业,纸质已上交))

2. Understanding the text:

    1) Ss read through the text and give T or F questions on the text in groups ( 8 questions for each group)

  2)Groups exchange the questions and finish the questions by other group

  3) One student from each group write a T or F question on the blackboard, the whole class answer the questions together.

3. Difficult sentences

1) Ss write the sentences that they can not understand on the blackboard, divide the sentences . (网络自主预习作业,纸质已上交))

2) Each group is in charge of some sentences, explaining and translating into Chinese.

4. Words and expressions: mini-speech on key words

1each student writes one word which he thinks important on a piece of paper and hand in

2) exchanges the papers in the whole class

3) each student gets a paper with one word on it

4) each student gives a mini-talk in his group, with the word he got as the key word

5) two groups present before the whole class

III. Post-reading tasks:

1. Reproduce the text: suppose you are one of the civil rights heroes, who help slaves escape. Dangers emerge in the course. What should you do in the following situations?

1)     Each group get a piece of paper with situation on it

2)     Group members discuss solutions

3)     Groups present before the whole class

2.  Listen and answer:

   Listen to the personal account of runaway slave Linda Brent and answer the following questions.

3.   Write: ( Homework)

Search on the Internet for the information of civil rights struggle and write a story about one of the topics  you like.

1) civil rights hero        2) slaves      3) dangers of escape  4) Underground Railroad    5) Cincinnati

 

后记:

1.词汇的练习,是这个学期的新尝试,第一单元也用过,这次想完善,所以继续采用。   

2.课文细节理解采用学生出 T or F questions,小组互改,全班做其中的一部分,感觉比老师直接问比较好。
