rundown
I. Warming up
1. watch a movie clip from You’ve Got
Mail(Joe与Cathleen超市相遇那一段)
Script:
…
Joe: Hi, Rose. That is a great name, Rose. This is Kathleen. I’m Joe.
Henry: And I’m Henry.
Joe: Henry, how are you? Happy holidays. This is a credit card
machine. Happy Thanksgiving. It’s your turn to say Happy
Thanksgiving back.
Rose: Happy Thanksgiving back.
Joe: Knock-knock.
Rose: Who’s there?
Joe: Orange.
Rose: Orange who?
Joe: Orange, you’re going to give us a break by zipping this credit
card through the credit card machine? Come on you can do it. Zip
zip. There you go. Rose, ah, that is a
great name. So you’re fine.
Kathleen: Fine.
Joe: Happy Thanksgiving. Henry, Happy
Thanksgiving.
2. Questions
1) We can see a dramatic change
on the sales-girl’s face: business face——friendly and smiling face.
What makes this change?
(open answer. But direct the students to the importance of one’s
name in social communication.)
2) What do you think of these names:吴乾仰,银剑,杨伟,侯漾?
(open)
3) what does your name mean, and what does it say about you?
(open. Encourage the students to talk about what their names carry:
hopes, wishes, roles, expectations… )
3. Do you know their original names:
汪涵、成龙、梅艳芳、刘德华? Why do their change their name? (汪建刚 陈港生 何加南
刘福荣)
A name conveys a special character and specific meaning of his
life. A name can add self-confidence to their talents..
Transitional remark: Would Oprah have become a
famous talk show host if her name had been Mabel? Would MJ be the
King of Pop if his name had been Bob? Your names are the
cornerstone of your personality. From creative spellings to family
tributes, your names say a lot about you, and they help you become
who you are, help you build your self-confidence and they also help
others from impression on you. So if the name you are given at
birth does not suit you, you should change it as soon as possible
because names can affect your life greatly. But remember: Rose
still smell well if it is not called rose.
玫瑰不叫玫瑰,依然芳香如故!
II. Text
Understanding
Retell the stories related to the
following names:
1. Debbie
2. Joe
3. Harry
4. Julian and Rory
5. Elmer and Hubert; Michael and David
(有些故事很短,大家可以适当展开发挥。)
Sample.
Julian is a 4-year-old nursery school boy. He is a bit active.
However the name Julian gives the teacher such an impression that
he is quiet and inactive. So she gets him to sit quietly and read a
book. And this annoys Julian. He can not help joining the ball
game. While Rory…
Summary: The text is about the description of the ways names can make a difference. A name with positive sense is good for a person and can encourage one to have new friends and successful career. But sometimes people make the mistake of name stereotyping and have prejudices against or in favor of certain names. The writer suggests if your name doesn’t suit you, you can change your name.
