JUNE, the sixth month of the year, consisting of 30 days. The name came into English from Latin, possible from the word juniors (“youths”) on the ground that this month once honored the young. More probably, however, the derivation may be traced to the Roman goddess Juno, who was the wife and sister of Jupiter, or possibly to Junius, the name of a Roman clan. Juno was the patroness and guardian of women, as well as the protector of marriages, and June has long been the month most closely associated with marriage.

The flower associated with June is the rose, and the birthstone of the month is the pearl, moonstone, or alexandrite. Among literary references to June, one of the best known is “And what is so rare as a day in June?/Then, if ever, come perfect days,” from James Russell Lowell’s The Vision of Sir Launfal.

In the United States, special observances in June include Jefferson Davis’ Birthday (June 3 or the first Monday in June), a legal holiday in several Southern states; Kamehameha Day (June 11), a holiday in Hawaii honoring the king who united the Hawaiian islands into one kingdom; Flag Day (June 14), when the flag is widely displayed; and Father’s Day (the third Sunday in June).

Although the summer solstice occurs on or about June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere, marking the beginning of summer, the month is sometimes called the “midsummer month.” Midsummer Eve (June 23) and Midsummer Day (June 24) are celebrated throughout much of Europe and particularly in Scandinavia.
