POSTULATE, in mathematics and logic, any statement belonging to a set of statements that is accepted without proof and is used as a basis for deducing other statements. A set of postulates on which a deductive system is based is usually designed to have independent postulates. Other goals in choosing a set of postulates include the consistency of the postulates and their fewness in number. See also AXIOM; MATHEMATICS.
