在谈翻译的时候，有几次我谈及了一个概念——“范畴词”，不少人不知为何物。这也不奇怪，当年我在进行硕士论文答辩的时候，答辩委员会的一位老师指出了我的论文中的一处翻译问题，尽管他没有要求我进行解释，但是我发现，他也不知道“范畴词”为何物，不然他不会提出这样与身份不相符的问题。
我第一次接触范畴词这个概念是在上大学期间，应该是在翻译家庄绎传所著的一本谈毛选翻译的书中专门看到的。所谓范畴词，是指一些具有概括意义、表示人或事物分类范畴的词语，常用在具体词的后面，对其进行分类总括，以便与其它词语搭配。比如：“劫机事件”中的“事件”，“再就业问题”中的“问题”，“发展情况”中的“情况”等等，在汉译英时可以省略不译，译出来反而累赘。

中国有12亿多人口，陆地自然资源人均占有量低于世界平均水平。

natural resources per capita are lower than the world's

1998年是联合国确定的国际海洋年，中国政府愿借此机会介绍中国海洋事业的发展情况。
The year 1998
has been designated by the United Nations as International Ocean

introduce the progress of China
可以谈正式结束两岸敌对状态问题。
We may discuss how to end the
cross-straits hostility formally.
见到自己的故乡，他想起了童年的情景。
The sight of his native place called
back his childhood．
我们应该积极帮助他们解决就业问题和改善生活条件,使他们切实感受到社会主义社会的温暖。
We must take effective measures to
help them find jobs and improve their living conditions so that
they will truly feel the warmth of our socialist
society.
我们应当说在用人问题上对不正之风开红灯，以便让青年人有机会充分发挥自己的才能
We must give the red light to
all malpractices in the use of people for the purpose of letting
young people fully display their talents.
从新闻媒介所暴露的情况来看，不正之风在一些地区已经非常严重，必须采取严格措施刹住这股歪风

当然，在具体的翻译过程中，判断一个词是否为范畴词，需要根据上下文或具体语境来分析，然后决定是否需要翻译出来。这个以后再谈。
