Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled On Maintaining Trust by commenting on the saying, “It takes years to build trust, and a few seconds to destroy it.” You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.
On Maintaining Trust
(1)
Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that trust crisis has been a grave problem with which this nation is confronted. Taking a look around, we can find examples too numerous to list. A case in point is that KFC, one of the most famous fast-food restaurants in the world, is being doubted in China because of its problematic chicken. Just as the saying goes, “It takes years to build trust, and a few seconds to destroy it.”
In view of the seriousness of this problem, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. First, it is essential that severer laws and regulations be worked out and enacted to ban various dishonest behaviors and maintain trust among society. Secondly, the public should enhance their awareness of protecting their rights and upholding social justice. With proper laws and an alert public, it will only be a matter of time before trust crisis becomes a thing of the past.
(2)
A famous saying goes “It takes years to build trust, and a few seconds to destroy it”, which means that trust cannot be won easily, but it can be lost with little effort. In other words, either a community or a person should mind its or his behavior; otherwise, the hard gained good reputation will evaporate in a minute.
In short, prudence is essential if a person or an organization wants to maintain trust from others. At every step, weigh in mind the significance that his or its behavior has to the future. And remember, Rome was not built in a day, but it can be destroyed overnight.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Computer and Man by commenting on the saying, “It is not a real danger that the computer thinks like man, but that man thinks like the computer.” You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.
Computer and Man
An interesting saying goes that “It is not a real danger that the computer thinks like man, but that man thinks like the computer”, which best describes the troublesome situation that the computer confronts mankind with.
Undoubtedly, the computer has developed an exceedingly high speed of calculation and alarmingly capacity of storage in the past decades. It is even deemed smarter than human beings by some people and is believed to be able to defeat and enslave man in the future.
However, this is far less dangerous than the fact that man tends to think like a computer, by which is meant that mankind has developed too serious a dependence on the computer, so much so that they have lost their mentality and creativity. Taking a look around, one can find instances too many to enumerate: people go too quickly to the computer for answers to questions; they seldom give much thought about what they have been given or what they have stored; they have become mere transmitters of information.
Such being the case, it is essential that measures be taken before things get worse. In the first place, one should think independently first when confronted with a problem or question; in the second place, he or she should regard information online in a critical manner. Only by so doing can we make full use of the computer while avoiding being manipulated by it.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled The Impact of the Internet on Interpersonal Communication. Your essay should start with a brief description of the picture. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.
(1)
In the picture, the man asks his daughter about her school day, with the intention of chatting with her. However, his daughter brings the conversation to a halt by simply asking her dad to read her blog. This is a vivid example of the impact of the Internet on interpersonal communication. This impact is so serious that it is high time we paid attention to it.
Firstly, due to the wide use of the Internet, our e-pals always take priority to our family and friends in real life. Much of our time and energy is spent online.
Secondly, the Internet deprives us the delight of communication in person. When talking to someone beside us, we can hear their voices, see their expressions, and even hold their hands if we would like to. This is much more enjoyable.
Last but not least, the Internet will cause a degradation of our skills of face-to-face communication. We may feel embarrassed and find it harder to talk with people around us.
In a word, we shouldn’t be enslaved by the Internet. No matter how convenient it is to chat online, we should remember the benefits of face-to-face communication.
(2)
This is a sarcastic but realistic picture. As we can see in it, a father, while reading newspaper, asks his young daughter about her day in school. The girl, walking away from her father, answers carelessly, “You can read all about it on my blog, dad.”
Simple as the drawing is, the message it conveys is thought-provoking. Apparently, it is meant to reveal the fact that such online means of communication as blog, micro blog, QQ and MSN, are severely affecting interpersonal communication. Just as the cartoon reveals, many youngsters tend to spend more time online than chatting with others, their parents included, face to face. Evidently, this will exert a negative influence on their relationship with others. Due to the absence of facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, physical contact and timely feedback in most cases, misunderstanding may come as a result, leading to conflicts eventually.
While we should not turn a blind eye to the positive role of online means of communication, such as fuller and freer expression of one’s thoughts, and accessibility of people far away, we should also pay due attention to its negative effect. In other words, we should strike a balance between the use of modern media and traditional ways of communication.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled The Way to Success by commenting on Abraham Lincoln’s famous remark, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.
The Way to Success
A famous remark by Abraham Lincoln goes that “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” Obviously, by so saying, the late American President means that laying a solid foundation is of vital importance in achieving success. In other words, one should keep his or her eyes on the process or the preparation work of a task rather than hasting to the end, which more often than not, results in waste of time.
This saying is truly inspiring and instructive, especially when it comes to our daily life and work. Take English study as an example. There are numerous failures in College English Test Band 4 or Band 6. Most of them lack a sound grasp of basic grammar and vocabulary, rushing to take model tests, only to erode their confidence or wasting their time. Others, on the contrary, do a careful and painstaking job with the study of their text books, reviewing grammatical rules and vocabulary even learnt in middle school. Though seemingly they are slow in starting their preparation for the exam, they are usually the final winners.
People tend to be impatient or too thirsty for easy success in modern society. Actually, whenever we are in haste, we should let Lincoln’s words ring by our ear and remember: no pains, no gains, and haste makes waste.
