Talking about friends
Think of a good friend.
What do you do together?
What do you talk about?
Why do you like him/her?
In general, what kind of people do you like?
Then we learn some words we may use:
serious
selfish
sensitive
generous
sincere
witty
easygoing
sociable
humor
confident
arrogant
reliable
example:
John: I like people that are sociable and talk a lot. It’s important for them to have a sense of humor, too. I love having lively, witty conversations with friends. I easily get bored when I’m with people who are quiet or shy.
Stone: I’m the opposite. I feel much more comfortable when I’m with people who are quiet. I think people that are sociable and witty are often arrogant. I prefer to have friends who stand back and notice what’s going on around them. I couldn’t have a close friendship or go out with anybody who wasn’t sensitive and kind.
David: It’s cool to be a bit arrogant, and I want to hang out with friends that are cool. I might change my mind if I have a serious relationship or want to get married. But right now, I want to have fun.
Cindy: Maybe we aren’t so different. When you get fed up with just having fun, you’ll probably start looking for a lot of sensitive friends and a very kind husband. Deep down, you probably want the same things as me.
Now talk about today’s topic. Here are some sentence patterns you may use:
