Professor Diao Weimin of the Civil Aviation Management Institute of China said the accused could be charged under section 114 of the Penal Code for endangering public safety if he is found to have deliberately opened the emergency door. If convicted, Piao could face jail term of between three to 10 years.
Prof Diao Weimin also said Piao's action was more severe than those carried out onboard a standstill plane."Taking tougher legal action against such offenders would send a deterrent message to others," he told The Straits Times.
The media reports did not carry details of the charge slapped on Piao or whether he was convicted.
