翻译：

决定人的智力的有有个因素。第一个是与生俱来的大脑的种类。人的大脑是很不相同的，有些人比其他人更有能力。但是，不管他一开始有个多么好的大脑，除非他拥有良好的学习机会，否则这样的个体仍会有较低的智力。所以第二个因素就是这个个体在他所生存的环境里发生了什么事。如果一个个体所处的智力低下的环境里，很有可能他的大脑会发育不好，他将不能达到他应该能达到的智力水平。

个体的智力由环境决定的重要性能够通过相似的双生子情况来证明，彼得和约翰，是双生子，三个月时他们父母双亡，他们被分别寄养。彼得在一个隔离的社区由一对智力低下的父母抚养，没有接受良好教育的机会。而约翰由一对上过大学的家景良好的父母收养教育。这种环境不同持续到他们二十来岁，那时他们接受测试检查他们的智力水平。约翰的I.O.值是125比平均水平高25点，比他的同卵双生弟弟高整整40点。
