Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, bicycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. it may be a game of some 1.kind footbal,hockey,golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.

Those who have a passion for 2.climbing high and difficult mountains are often 3.looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to 4.suffer cold and hardship, and to make risks on high mountains? this astonishment Is caused, 5.probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to 6.which men give their leisure.

Mountaineering is a sport and 7.not a game. There are no man-made rules 8.as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, 9.of cause, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to 10. ignore but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering 11.attractive to may people. Those who climb mountains are 12.free to use their own methods.

If we compare mountaineering and other more 13.familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that 14.mountaineering is not a “team game”. we should be mistaken 15.in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “team” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face 16.linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is 17.obviously teamwork.

The mountain climber knows that he may 18.have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of 19.nature his sport requires high mental and physical 20.qualities.

登山者知道，他必须与比人类更强壮抗力作斗争，必须与自然作斗争。他的运动要求很高的精神和身体素质。
