When we talk about someone’s personality, we mean the ways in which he or she acts, speaks, thinks and feels that make that individual different from others.

有很多词汇可以描述一个人想法、感觉和行为。Gordan All Ports,一个美国心理学家,发现有几乎一万八千个英语单词可以描述人的行为中的不同特性。我们中的许多人用这些信息作为描绘某人的个性或给它分类的基础。书虫,保守派,军人类型——人们被别人以这些术语形容。
人们总是试图互相“分类”。早期希腊戏剧中,演员戴着面具,以向观众表明他们扮演的角色是坏人还是英雄。事实上,“person(人)”和“personality(个性)”这两个词都来源于拉丁文中的“persona”,意思就是“面具”。今天,大多数的电视和电影演员都不戴面具了。但是我们能很容易辨别好人和坏人,因为这两类人在外表和行为上都是不同的。
