1 红色

英语red的引申义常作贬用，表“残忍、灾难、烦琐、狂热”等，如：have a red hands(犯杀人罪)；red ruin(火灾)；catch sb. red-handed(当场抓获)；red tape(官样文章)；red tapism(文犊主义)；His ideas are red.(他的思想激进)；painted the town red (狂欢、胡闹)。这些表达的汉译与“红”是不对应的：

明白、空白、徒然、无代价、轻视”等，英译时都与white无关,就如同有些词组汉译时不与“白”对应一样：

4 黄色

在英语中，yellow是卑怯者的形容词。 美国俚语又常以yellow代替cowardly，如yellow dog(卑鄙之徒)；He is too yellow to stand up and fight.(他太懦弱了而不敢站起来进行斗争)。而黄色在中国传统中是神圣、高贵、权威的象征，被视为中华民族的本色，又是帝王之色。但今天“扫黄” (anti-pornography campaign)中的“黄色”却是色情的同义词。此外，汉语中的“黄色电影(obscene movies)，黄色书刊(filthy books)，黄色音乐(vulgar music)等中的“黄色”均不能直译为yellow。请看下列“yellow”与名词连用时的一些习惯用法及其翻译：

在上面这些例子中，汉译时也都是与“黄”无关的，即yellow不能直译为“黄色”。

5 蓝色

Blue在英语中通常表示一个人处在情绪低落、精神不振的状态。如：in a blue mood和having(or getting)the blues，用来表示“情绪低落”、“忧郁”、 “沮丧”或“烦闷”。又如：a blue Monday(倒霉的星期一)。另外，blue 也可用来表示由于劳累而面带倦容的神态。如：She ran and ran until she was blue in the face.(她跑啊跑啊，直到精疲力竭才停下来)。在表示面容由于寒冷、打伤或恐惧等引起发青时，英语也多用blue。如：His face was blue from the cold.(他的脸冻得发紫)。又如英语中的“be beaten black and blue”，汉 语中则说“被打得青一块、紫一块”。此外，blue 在英语中引申作“淫秽色情”解。如：blue film(色情片)，blue gag(下流笑话)。在英语中，blue也有褒用，如用来表示社会地位高，有权势或出身于名门望族等。如：They boasted a lineage of pure blue blood.(他们夸耀纯贵族的家系)，blue book(名人录)，blue stocking(女才子)等。因而，我们在翻译时要特别注意，尤其是关于blue的一些习惯用法的翻译：

6 绿色

绿色是生命之色，青春之色。 Green在英语中常使人联想起“新鲜的”、“新近的” 和“精力旺盛”的意思。如：fresh green memory(清新而栩栩如生的回忆)；a green old age(老当力壮)。Green除了褒用之外，也有贬用。英语中常用green表示“幼稚无知、没有经验、缺乏训练”之意，如：a green hand(新手)。He is still green at this job.(他对这件工作还是生疏的)。此外，green还可表示嫉妒，如：She was green with envy.(她妒忌心很强)。Green也可表示脸色苍白的、有病容的。例如：What’s wrong with you？You are looking green.(你怎么啦？你看上去脸色很苍白)。
