W：Can you tell me some of the customs on New Year's Day in Hong Kong, Johhny?

M: Of course. We eat special food that has special meanings. For example, we eat

mushrooms because they bring people good luck and lots of money.

W:Ha…In Scotland we also have special food,such as cake with lots of fruit in it. we

also think this kind of cake can bring us good luck and lots of money.

M:We also wear new clothes which are thought to be lucky as well.

W:Really? In Scotland, cleaning the house is another thing that is supposed to be lucky.

So the day before New Year's Day, everything in the house should be cleaned. And

the front and back doors should be left open.

M:Why are thd doors kept open?

W:In this way, the old can get out of the back doors and the new can come in through

the front doors.

M:How interesting!

Unit 2 My favorite Chinese festival

My favorite Chinese festival is the Dragon Boat Festival. It falls on the fifth day of fifth lunar month every day. It's a day to remember Qu Yuan.

On this day people usually eat Zongzi and hold dragon boat races. They also drink realgar wine, hang Chinese mugwort around the doors and carry a spice bag around with them.

The reason why I like the festival best is that I enjoy watching the dragon boat race. The members of the dragon boat team have such great team spirit---everybody tries their best to win the race.
