2001年，世界最大的能源交易商美国安然公司假账问题曝光，12月2日，安然正式向破产法院申请破产保护，破产清单中所列资产高达498亿美元，成为美国历史上最大的破产企业。位列世界第五的会计师事务所安达信作为安然公司财务报告的审计者，既没审计出安然虚报利润，也没发现其巨额债务，最终安达信因审计工作中出现欺诈行为被美国证券交易委员会罚了700万美元。

    能源巨人一夜之间轰然倒塌，在美国朝野引起极大震动，2002年7月，美国国会正式通过了Sarbanes-Oxley法案（简称SOX法案），明确要求管理层对公司财务信息披露和内部控制效力负有直接责任，公司的内控措施应由管理层声明有效并由独立审计机构出具内控审计意见提交给美国证监会（SEC）。这一法案的颁布实施，令到企业对会计人员的需求剧增，会计专业的毕业生成为最抢手的人才，就算在金融风暴影响之下的2009年，会计专业仍成为就业的绿洲，相比2008年，会计专业毕业生的平均起薪上涨了2%。这样的现状，以职业为导向，注重投资回报的美国学生自然对会计专业趋之若鹜。

    世界是平的，中国学生在接受到这样的信息之后，近几年选择前往美国读会计的学生大大增加，一些非会计专业，甚至是英语专业的学生也申请转读会计专业。虽然，鼓励跨学科发展的美国给学生提供了广泛的空间，要求本科是修读商科专业非会计专业的学生在硕士阶段必须补修本科的一些课程，比如Intermediate Accounting, Advanced Accounting, Audit, Tax等，要求本科非商科专业的学生先修Finance、Marketing、Operations Management、Economics 、Statistics、Business Law、Accounting Principles等课程。但是，我们要明白的是，由于中美两国会计体制的不同，美国大学要求的审计是美国的审计，税法是美国的税法，不要说排名靠前的学校，任何一个经过AACSB认证的学校都不会降低对此专业的录取要求。排名靠前的会计专业硕士学位，学校网站上尽管没有工作经历的要求，但拥有相关工作经验的学生更具有竞争力。

     Master of Accounting (MACC)，Mater of Science in Accounting，Master of Accounting Science，学位本质一样，叫法不同而已。但是，申请人要仔细研究学校网站上的信息，否则，投错申请会导致颗粒无收，比如：UIUC的Master of Accounting Science（MAS）提供给本科阶段在当地修读会计专业特别是在UIUC修读会计专业的学生申请，Master of Science in Accountancy（MSA）提供给拥有商业背景的申请人包括国际学生申请，学校规定申请人必须修读过两门会计学原理和统计学、宏观经济学、微观经济学、金融、市场学、组织行为学中的任何一门课程。

    门槛如此多多，一个主要的目的是为了让学生满足参加Certified Public Accountant (CPA)（注册会计师）考试的要求，以下是俄亥俄州CPA考试的基本要求：

The basic educational requirements for admission to the CPA examination in Ohio are:

       A baccalaureate degree including 150 semester hours (225 quarter hours) of college credit. In lieu of 150 semester hours (225 quarter hours), a baccalaureate or associates degree and a score of 1200 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination General Test.

       30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in accounting or 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in accounting, excluding principles, with coverage in these five subject areas:

       auditing,

       financial accounting,

       management accounting,

       professional ethics,

       and taxation.

       24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in business courses other than accounting courses.

There are similar education requirements in 45 other states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.
