Prologue
Inside Drama In Nighttime, Outside Drama in Daytime
Chinese Text by Yu Yue
In cities, nighttime is a like a drama on stage. It’s a perfect background for lights. It makes many places charming. It gives these places a better reason to exist. Beijing’s Back Lake and Sanlitun as well as Shanghai’s bund are good examples.
But in daytime, if you come to these places, it’s kinda like you see an empty theater - you find all lights are gone and you’re outside the drama. Everything is so real and ordinary - the wife of a cafe house owner looking at the lake surface, some waitresses talking about their boyfriends or new clothes, or a dog basking under the eaves of an old house - all details in life that are hidden by the nightly lights are revealed.
At nighttime, we dream. But at daytime, we feel another truer side of life. It’s good to visit those places both after nightfall and after daybreak.
So, a good traveler loves both nighttime and daytime.
