悠闲是个长而慢的词。

悠悠的时光，悄无声息地流过，而人呢？兀自不动，在赏花，看云，品茶，下棋，钓鱼，或者发呆。在现代社会，悠闲已经变成了一种奢侈品。作一个上进的现代人，就绝不能停留，他必须工作，必须奋斗，必须忙忙碌碌。

在北京或上海这类的大都会，你碰见任何一个成功或者渴望成功、有望成功的人士，问及近况，他们都会立刻放声咏叹：“忙啊，忙！”但你千万不要会错了意，他们决不是在诉苦，那是他们的自我肯定。

忙什么呢？这并不重要，重要的是在忙着。忙着就是生命的意义，而通过忙碌，人会产生一种感觉，那就是我总算没有被风驰电掣的时代班车所错过。于是，对都市人来说，忙，还是悠闲？这是一道困难的选择题。说它困难，是因为对都市人来说，问题并不于是否能够悠闲，而在于他们是否还有享受悠闲的能力。

有一天，我终于来到了以悠闲闻名的成都。坐在茶馆里，看着阳光在对面房屋的青瓦上一寸寸移动，同行的朋友们突然安静下来，仿佛在顷刻之间，他们被这份慢所震慑，被这份悠长所感动。

但是，手机的铃声响了。接听电话的人立刻回到焦虑和紧张——他很忙，他的表情像在飞跑。接着，铃声此起彼伏，没有接到电话的人也开始躁动——看着别人忙，是令人心慌的。都市人最不能忍受的是，这世上正在发生着什么重大的事情，而这重要的事情，却自己毫无关联，多么令人懊恼！于是，他们也掏出了手机……

我们度过了一个忙碌的下午。

但愿一切的忙碌都是必要的，有结果有意义的。

但是，在百忙之中，我们是否曾经抽出一点点时间想一下：在如此快速、拥挤、决不停留的生命中，我们是否错过了什么别的事物？

在歌德那表达现代精神的伟大诗剧中，浮士德博士对对生命最深情的礼赞，恰是对时间发出的。他说：“多美啊。请停下来。”这是对每一个现代人发出的呼吁和提醒。也许，那些美好的让生命变得丰沛安然的事物，就隐藏在那些“长”里面，那些“慢”里面，隐藏在那些“悠闲”之中。

A Toss-Up?

Today, we get so mired down in everyday whirlwind life that leisure might be a luxury for all of us. With a strong urge to get ahead, we are always rehashing an old idea: “Early bird catches the worm.”

It’s true we keep on sounding the alarm for ourselves, “I can’t stop. I can’t afford goofing off. I must work and be busy.” If we ask successful or up-and-coming persons how they’ve been doing lately, “busy, busy” might be the answer. But please don’t misunderstand. They are not complaining; on the contrary, they feel affirmed.

For us, what truly matters is that WE ARE BUSY. We cling to the notion that by being busy, we could jump onto the bandwagon of the time; by being busy, we are not falling by the wayside. We fear our self-identify, sense of invincibility and self-worth could be shaken. We fear being left out of the loop. So we are continuously building momentum and producing results like nobody’s business.

But while frantic overachievement runs us ragged, we know there is another choice: leisure - another perception of life that endorses appreciating natural beauty, drinking tea, playing chess, fishing and simply daydreaming.

So it’s time for us to ponder: busy or leisurely? It’s a toss-up. For city dwellers, it’s more a question of whether we have the gumption to enjoy the leisure than a question of whether there is leisure.

In this crowded fast world where we are burning ourselves out, are we missing something? Could there be light at the other end of the tunnel, too?

“It’s so beautiful. Please stop!” That’s how Faust celebrates life in Goethe’s play. It’s quite a mouthful to say.
