     由句型【prefer(doing)A to(doing)B 比起(做)B来更喜欢(做)A

Lucy prefers English to French.】

John wants to see me today. I would rather he came to tomorrow than today.
Would rather you had not done that.
I would rather have gone to the theatre than stayed home night.

二、would rather概述。
would rather not do sth。
例: Mr Li would rather not listen to rock music
4.would /had
If you’d rather be alone, we’ll all leave here.
He’d rather work in the countryside.

三、 would rather扩展。
would rather…than…或would…rather than…句型.
I would rather watch TV at home than go to the cinema.
The children would walk there rather than take a bus.
2.也可以颠倒为:rather than…would…
例:Rather than work in such bad condition, he would give up
I would rather have noodles than rice.
I would rather go to work by bike than by bus.
@I would rather talk with his mother than with his father.
Would you rather stay here or go home?
@Which would you rather have, apples or bananas?
四、would rather/sooner和prefer/would prefer的区别。
       would rather和would sooner之间一般没有区别,但经常接触到的是would rather。
例:Tom would rather/sooner read than talk./ Tom prefers reading to talking.
注意:would rather后跟不带to的不定式+than+不带 to的不定式,而prefer后跟动名词+to+动名词。
He prefers wine to beer.= He would rather drink wine than beer.
He prefers dogs to cats./He would rather have dogs than cats.(很明显,这两句的意思并不完全相同。 )
       @ would rather+不带to的不定式有时可代替 would prefer+带 to的不定式。
例: I’d rather fly than go by sea.=I’d prefer to fly.
Would you like some gin? —I’d prefer a coffee.=I’d rather have coffee than gin.
       @would rather/sooner和would prefer后面都可跟完成式,但后者带to。
例: We went by sea but I’d rather have gone by air=I’d prefer to have gone by air.

1. rather than 与would 连用时,构成“would rather...than...”
She'd rather die than lose the children.
He is an explorer rather than a sailor.
You rather than I are going to go camping.
The sweater she bought was beautiful rather than cheap.

We will have the meeting in the classroom rather than in the great hall.
She enjoys singing rather than dancing.
We should help him rather than he should help us.
I decided to write rather than (to) telephone.
Rather than allow the vegetables to go bad, he sold them at half price.
He ran rather than walked.

More than的用法
A. “More than+名词”表示“不仅仅是”
Modern science is more than a large amount of information.
Jason is more than a lecturer; he is a writer, too.
We need more than material wealth to build our country.
I have known David for more than 20 years.
Let's carry out the test with more than the sample copy.
More than one person has made this suggestion.
In doing scientific experiments, one must be more than careful with the instruments.
I assure you I am more than glad to help you.
D. more than + (that)从句,其基本意义是“超过(=over)”,但可译成“简直不”“远非”.
--That is more than I can understand .
--That is more than I can tell.
--The heat there was more than he could stand.
--More often than not (经常),people tend to pay attention to what they can take rather than what they can give.
---All of us are more than a little concerned about(非常关心)the current economic problems

more...than 的用法
He has more books than me.
He is more careful than the others.
 2. 与其……不如
He is more lucky than clever.
He is more (a) scholar than (a) teacher.

no more than 与 not more than
--This test takes no more than thirty minutes.
--The pub was no more than half full.
- For thirty years,he had done no more than he (had) needed to.

not more than 为 more than (多于)的否定式,其意为“不多于”“不超过”。
Not more than 10 guests came to her birthday party.
She has no more than three hats.
She has not more than three hats.
I have no more than five yuan in my pocket.
I have not more than five yuan in my pocket.

no more...than 与 not more...than
1. no more...than 表示对两者都否定,意为“同……一样不”(=neither...nor...)。如:
---He is no more a writer than a painter. (=He is neither a painter nor a writer.)
--He’s no more able to read Spanish than I am. (=Neither he nor I am able to read Spanish.)
---I know no more Spanish than I know Greek. (=I know neither Spanish nor Greek.)

2. not more...than 指两者都具有某种特征,但是程度不同,意为“不如”“不及”(= not so... as)。如:(less…than…)
--She is not more clever than he is. (=She is not so clever as he is.)
--This book is not more difficult than that one. (This book is not so difficult as that one.)

no more...than 与 no less...than
 1. no more...than 意为“与……
She’s no more a great singer than I am.
A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.
He is no more an artist than you are a mathematician.

 2. no less...than 意为“和……
Your brother is no less wise than you.
A dolphin is no less a clever animal than a dog is.
Italian is no less a mother tongue for him than English.
nothing more than /nothing less than
nothing less than 完全是,和...
---It is nothing less than stealing to take a thing away without the permission of its owner.
--They expect nothing less than a revolution.

there's nothing I like less than..。
--There's nothing I like less than lying.
--There's nothing I like less than working overtime.

less than 的用法
It’s less than half an hour’s drive from here.
In less than an hour he finished the work.
She eats less than she should.
Half the group felt they spent less than average.
The boys were less than happy about having a party.
We were less than delighted to have company that day.
He was less than helpful when we arrived.
He is less honest than his brother.
I regard him less as my teacher than as my friend.
He is less a teacher than an expert./He is more an expert than a teacher.

no less than 与 not less than
1. no less than 的意思是“多达”“有……之多”,强调多,与 no more than 意思相反。
He made no less than 500.
He paid no less than $10,000 for it.
No less than 50 people offered to buy it.

My father, no less than I, is a baseball fan.
2. not less than 为 less than(少于)的否定式,其意为“不少于”“不下于”“至少”。
He has not less than 10,000 dollars.
Not less than 500 people attended the meeting.
He has no less than seven daughters.
He has not less than seven daughters.

 no more...than 与 no less...than
  1. no more...than 意为“与……
     1. How beautifully she sings!I have never heardvoice.
  A. a better B. a best
  C. the better D. the best
I have never heard a better voice than her voice
He is fine, never better.
This bird is really lovely. I’ve never seen a finer one.
(1)“I’ve never found a better job.”“.”
  A. I don’t think so B. Too bad
  C. Congratulations D. Don’t worry
C。I’ve never found a better job 可视为 I’ve never found a better job than this job
(2)“What do you think of the service here?”“Oh, . We couldn’t have found a better place.”
  A. too bad B. sorryC. wonderful D. impossible
C。We couldn’t have found a better place 可视为 We couldn’t have found a better place than this place,其意为“我们不可能找到一个比这儿更好的地方”,即“这是我们所能找到的最好的地方”。
  (3) Boris has brains. In fact, I doubt whether anyone in the class hasIQ.
  A. a highB. a higher C. the higher D. the highest
  (4) How cold it is! We’ve never hadthis winter.
  A. the colder day B. a cold day
  C. the coldest dayD. a colder day
  2. Professor White has written some short stories, but he isknown for his plays.
  A. the best B. moreC. better D. the most
  【分析】此题首先不宜选 B 或 D,因为 well known 的比较级和最高级通常是 better known 和 best known,有时也可以是 more well known 和 most well known, 但通常不能是 more known 和 most known。

3. You arecareful than your brother. You two can’t do the work that needs care and skill.
  A. not more B. no more
  C. not lessD. no less
  not more...than=不如……
  no more...than=和……
  not less...than=不如……
  no less...than=和……
You are more careful than he is.
You are not more careful than he is.
You are no more careful than he is.
You are less careful than he is.
You are not less careful than he is.
You are no less careful than he is.
4.“Oh, how fat he is!”“But I think he isthan fat.”
  A. shortB. shorter C. more shortD. shortest
My room is smaller than yours.
Our country is more powerful than theirs.
He was more lucky than clever.
She was more surprised than angry.
  This is more a war movie than a western.

  20. —Minister, are you satisfied with the performance of the Chinese athletes in Athens Olympics?
—Yes, it couldn’t have been ______.
  A. worse B. betterC. so badD. the worse
  1. B。it can’t be worse It’s the worst thing I ever knew。
  3. A。We couldn’t have picked a worst day 与 It is the worst day we’ve picked 同义。
  4. A。a better 为 a better one 之省略。
10. D。只有表示实际距离的远,才可用 farther(此时也可用 further),否则就用 further。
  11. C。still/even/much less
  13. C。两者比较用比较级,表示“比……”;同级比较用 as...as 或 not as/so...as。
  14. D。no better than =as badly as,意为“一样不好”。
  17. A。根据 How stupid!I fear there’s no hope for him 可知说话人对 Jim 新工作表现的评价是负面的,故选 A。no better than 表示“与……
18. A。I’ve never seen a finer one This is the finest one I’ve ever seen。

一、prefer to do sth= would rather do sth更喜欢做某事,宁愿做某事。
I’d like to stay at home , but Max prefers toplay(play) football on Sundays.
= I’d like to stay at home , but Max would ratherplay(play) football on Sundays.
注意点:1. prefer to do sth 不仅有人称变换,第三人称形式是prefers to do sth , 而且还有时态变化, 过去时态为preferred to do sth。
      2. would rather
二、prefer to do sth rather than do sth=prefer doing sth to(doing) sth =would rather do sth than do sth 即prefer A to B, “比起B来更喜欢A”,其中to是介词。
例如:All students prefer to take the bus rather than walk.
= All students prefer taking the bus to walking.
=All students would rather take the bus than walk.
 1. Not all the tourists from Japan
_______ Western food to Chinese food.
A. likeB. prefer C. enjoyD. love
  解析:这道题的考点是prefer A to B 的结构,其中A 和B可以是名词、代词,或是动名词,所以答案是B。

 3. Some of my classmates _______ cartoons _______ documentaries.
  A. prefer ... to  B. would rather ... than  C. like ... better   D. like ... less

 4. She prefers to eat outside rather than at home.
  A. cookB. cooking  C. to cookD. cooks
解析: 这道题的考点是prefer to do sth rather than do sth的结构, 同学们不难发现,不管是prefer to do sth rather than do sth 还是would rather do sth than do sth, than 后面都是动词原形, 所以答案是A。

would prefer的用法
后接不定式时与rather than 或instead of连用,
如:He preferred to die rather than (to) steal.
He perferred to die instead of stealing.
I prefer swimming to skating. (I like swimming better than skating.)
3、prefer+
He comes from Shanghai, so he prefers rice.
I prefer going by bike. I prefer the white one.
4、prefer to do “愿意做”。I prefer to go at once.
5、prefer sb. to do “愿意某人做” I prefer you to go at once.
6、prefer to sth.“宁愿做... I prefer tea to milk. I prefer watching TV to going out.
7、prefer to do sth. rather than do sth.“宁愿做... I prefer to watch TV rather than go out.
8、prefer+ that从句“宁愿”(从句一般用虚拟语气)I prefer that you should do it.

Prefer
1.prefer sth.
"Do you like French?""Yes, but I prefer English.""
"Which do you prefer, rice or bread?""Either will do.""
2.prefer over sth.
I prefer over this newly-built lab, and you?
They prefer over new works that sing of their life today.
3. prefer sth. above all others
I prefer the book above all others.
The middle-aged man prefers swimming above all others.
4.prefer A to B
I prefer the original book to the revised edition.
Those Red Army men preferred death to surrender in their struggle with the enemy.
5. prefer doing A to doing B
Even on holidays Mr. Wang preferred reading to doing nothing.
6.prefer to do sth.
They prefer to spend the rest of the morning wandering in the streets.
7.prefer doing sth.
So you prefer speaking without referring to your notes?
Mr. Brown preferred spending his spare time doing some reading.

8. prefer to do sth. rather than do sth.
These workers prefered to work extra hours at night rather than leave the work until the next week.
Rather than go on holiday to the seaside I prefer to work days and go to school nights.
She prefers rather to sew than to knit.
9.prefer to do sth. rather than doing sth.
They prefer to join in the celebrations rather than going on a visit to the Palace Museum.
"What shall we have for lunch, rice or buns?""I prefer rice rather than buns.""
实际可视为在prefer 和rather than之后均省略了to have.
Mr. Smith preferred to meet us downstairs rather than upstairs.

10.prefer sb. to do sth.
I prefer you to spare some time to come to our art exhibition next week.

11.. prefer+that-clause. We prefer that each new student take a science course.
12.prefer sth. (or sb.)+adj.
I prefer the door open.
I prefer my coffee black.

2.表示想要做某事时,可说would like to do/ want to do sth. 如: I would like to go there. =I want to go there. would like无人称和数的变化,
