Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he'd become one
of the best-loved and most successful children's book writers in
the world. His books are popular with young readers. They enjoy the
invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and
plants.
In 1954, life magazine gave out a report about school children who
could not read. The report said many children's books weren't
interesting. Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to
write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words
with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He didn't receive
training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his
books.
In 1957, Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230
words to write the book and even a child who is only six years old
could read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Both children
and their parents loved it. Today it's still one of the stories
they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to
write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less
than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.
In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize (普利策奖) . He was honored
for the education and enjoyment his books provided American
children an d their parents.
He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of

A little mouse living on a farm was looking through a crack in the
wall one day and saw the farmer and his wife opening a package.
He was shocked to discover that it was a mousetrap(捕鼠夹). The mouse
ran to the farmyard warning everyone: “There is a mousetrap in the
house. There is a mousetrap in the house."
The chicken raised his head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell you
this trap is a horrible thing to you, but it is nothing to me and I
cannot be bothered with it."
The mouse turned to the pig. "I am sorry Mr. Mouse, but the trap is
no concern of mine either!" the pig said.
The mouse then turned to the bull.“ It sounds like you have a
problem, Mr. Mouse, but not one that concerns me." the bull
said.
The mouse returned to the house, head down and he felt a bit sad.
That night the sound of a trap catching something was heard
throughout the house. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was
caught. In the darkness she could not see that it was not the mouse
but a big snake whose tail the trap had caught.
The snake bit the farmer's wife. The wife caught a bad fever and
the farmer knew the best way to treat a fever was with chicken
soup. The farmer came to his farmyard and killed the chicken for
the soup.
The wife got sicker and friends and neighbours came over to take
turns looking after her. The farmer knew he had to feed them, so he
killed the pig.
The farmer's wife did not get better, in fact she died and so many
friends and family came to her funera1(葬礼) that the farmer had to
