     Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he'd become one of the best-loved and most successful children's book writers in the world. His books are popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.

     In 1954, life magazine gave out a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books weren't interesting. Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He didn't receive training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his books.

     In 1957, Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a child who is only six years old could read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Both children and their parents loved it. Today it's still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.

     In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize (普利策奖) . He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children an d their parents.

     He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read. Yet, his books are loved by people of all ages. Doctor Seuss once said, "I don't write for children. I write for people."

      A little mouse living on a farm was looking through a crack in the wall one day and saw the farmer and his wife opening a package.

     He was shocked to discover that it was a mousetrap(捕鼠夹). The mouse ran to the farmyard warning everyone: “There is a mousetrap in the house. There is a mousetrap in the house."

     The chicken raised his head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell you this trap is a horrible thing to you, but it is nothing to me and I cannot be bothered with it."

     The snake bit the farmer's wife. The wife caught a bad fever and the farmer knew the best way to treat a fever was with chicken soup. The farmer came to his farmyard and killed the chicken for the soup.

     The wife got sicker and friends and neighbours came over to take turns looking after her. The farmer knew he had to feed them, so he killed the pig.

     The farmer's wife did not get better, in fact she died and so many friends and family came to her funera1(葬礼) that the farmer had to kill the bull to feed all of them.

      So next time we hear that one of our friends is facing a problem and think it does not concern or effect us, let us remember that when any one of us is in trouble, we are all at risk.
