students sit in the back. Drivers’ ED cars are unlike other cars in
which they have two sets of brakes, one on driver side and one on
the other side where the

sits. Thus, if the student
driver should run into 47
, the instructor can take over. The car also
has another

三、阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
(A)
In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off
to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of
sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later
I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different
tale to tell.
My
grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65.
She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year
after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to
withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my
personal dream would have to wait.
Then
I got married with another dream: building my family with a
combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999, we adopted
our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic – and very
emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed
son No.3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.
You
can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under
the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo – a joyous zoo. Not
surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I
never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a
way. That meant taking as few as one class each
semester.
The
hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from
the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There
certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an
example for them to follow through the rest of their
lives.
In
2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me
over 21 years to get my college degree!
I am
not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when
you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge,
but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal.
Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a
process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.
51.

choice.
53.
What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last
paragraph?
A. Failure is the mother of
success. B. Little by litter,
one goes far.
C. Every coin has two
sides.
D. Well begun, half done.
54.
Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Caring and
determined.
B. Honest
and responsible.
C. Ambitious and
Sensitive

(B)
The
rise of the Internet has been one of the most transformative
developments in human history, comparable in impact to the
invention of the printing press and the telegraph. Over two billion
people worldwide now have access to vastly more information than
ever before, and can communicate with each other instantly, often
using Web-connected mobile devices they carry everywhere. But the
Internet’s tremendous impacts has only just begun.
“Mass adoption of the Internet is driving one of the most exciting
social, cultural, and political transformations in history, and
unlike earlier periods of change, this time the effects are fully
global,” Schmidt and Cohen write in their new book The New Digital
Age.
Perhaps the most profound changes will come when the five billion
people worldwide who currently lack Internet access get online. The
authors do an excellent job of examining the implications of the
Internet revolution for individuals, governments, and institutions
like the news media. But if the book has one major shortcoming,
it’s that authors don’t spend enough time applying a critical eye
to the role of Internet businesses in these changes.
In
their book, the authors provide the most authoritative volume to
date that describes — and more importantly predicts — how the
Internet will shape our lives in the coming decades. They paint a
picture of a world in which individuals, companies, institutions,
and governments must deal with two realities, one physical, and one
virtual.
At
the core of the book is the idea that “technology is neutral, but people
aren’t.” By
using this concept as a starting point, the authors aim to move
beyond the now familiar optimist vs. pessimist point of view that
has characterized many recent debates about whether the rise of the
Internet will ultimately be good or bad for society. In an
interview with TIME earlier this week, Cohen said although he and
his co-author are optimistic about many aspects of the Internet,
they’re also realistic about the risks and dangers that lie ahead
when the next five billion people come online, particularly with
respect to personal privacy and state supervision.
55.
How do Schmidt and Cohen describe the effects of the
Internet?
A.They are immeasurable.
B.They are worldwide.
C.They are unpredictable.
D.They are profound.
56. In what respect is the book The New Digital Age considered
inadequate?
A.It
fails to recognize the impact of the Internet
technology.
B.It
fails to look into the social implications of the
Internet.
C.It
lacks an objective evaluation of the role of Internet
businesses.
D.It
does not address the technical aspects of Internet
communication.
57. What will the future be like when everybody gets
online?
A.People will be dealing with two different
realities.
B.People will have equal access to
information.
C.People don’t have to travel to see the
world.
D.People don’t have to communicate face to face.
58. What does the passage say about the authors of The New Digital
Age?
A.They leave many questions unanswered concerning the
Internet.
B.They are optimistic about the future of the Internet
revolution.
C.They have explored the unknown territories of the virtual
world.
D.They don’t take sides in analyzing the effects of the
Internet.
(C)
Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time
and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few
apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather
than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that,
understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human
beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the
plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider
the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps
the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to
expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because
by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and
prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by
the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential
resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them,
they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than
physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired
through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications
which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have
already benefited from other spin-offs including
improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather
forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick pans and
mirrored sunglasses are by-products of technological developments
in the space industry!
While many resources are spent on what seems a small
return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and
intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to
save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how
the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The
danger exists, but knowledge can help human being to survive.
Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save
ourselves might not exist.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life,
surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on
other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different,
but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely
could in the future.
59.
Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph
l?
A. To express his
doubts.
B. To introduce points for discussion.
C. To compare different
ideas.
D. To describe the conditions on Earth.
60.
What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph
2?
A. Humans are nature-born to do so.
B. Humans have the tendency to fight.
C. Humans may find new sources of food.
D. Humans don't like to stay in the same place.
61.
The underlined word “spin-offs” in Paragraph 4 probably refers
to
________.
A. survival
chances
B. potential resources
C. unexpected
benefits
D. physical possessions
62.
What makes it possible for humans to live on other
planets'?
A. Our genetic

(D)
Why is it
that some people seem to learn several languages without any
effort, while for others learning just one foreign language is
neither enjoyable nor successful? What makes learning a new
language so easy for some and so difficult for others.
We each have our own preferred
way of learning as a result of our cultural and educational
backgrounds and our personalities. Experts have identified
different learning styles.
Visual Learners usually enjoy
reading and prefer to see an image of the words they are learning.
They like looking at pictures and flashcards. Auditory Learners, on
the other hand, prefer to learn by listening. They enjoy
conversations and talking to others. They don’t need to see words
written down. One study revealed that Japanese students tend to be
Visual Learners, while English-speaking American, prefer the
auditory learning style.
Some people like to learn by
using their hands to touch objects, while others like to move
around and need frequent
breaks from sitting at a
desk.
There are Analytical Learners,
meaning they enjoy understanding how the language works. They love
studying grammar rules and like to focus on details, whereas Global
Learners are more interested in communicating their ideas and are
not worried about whether what they say is grammatically
correct.
In spoken English, the
Japanese tend to be Reflective Learners. They think carefully
before they speak to ensure their message is accurate. They do not
make so many mistakes but their communication is slower. European
learners tend to be Impulsive Learners. They speak more fluently
and worry about how well they are
communicating rather than how many mistakes they are making.
So, to
do well in a language, you should
identify your style and try to find a class that will teach you the
way you want to learn. For example, if you are a Reflective
Learner, you may not do so well
in a purely conversational class and as an Auditory Learner, you
probably don’t want to do so much reading. In fact if you are an
Auditory Learner, you are probably not enjoying yourself right
now!
63. The passage mainly talks about ______.
A. the difficult learning
styles of some people
B. the easy learning ways of
other people
C. the different learning
styles of the Japanese
D. the different learning
methods of all the people
64. Which of the following phrases isn’t connected with the
learning style?
A. The way people are taught
to learn a language.
B. The place where people
are from.
C. The size of people.
D. The kind of person people
are.
65. Analytical Learners ______.
A. are similar to Global
Learners
B. never worry about mistakes
C. love to study
details
D. do well in
conversation

In
my imagination, we will have quite a different life in the
future. First of
all, we will lead a more relaxed life. We will
definitely work and live with the assistance of the most
up-to-date/advanced technology/robots, which can not
only/both improve working efficiency but also/and free us from
heavy pressure. In addition, though it’s easier for us to
have access to news resources, our privacy will be
well-protected. The latest form of communication will
automatically identify harmful messages and delete them, so
our personal information won’t be invaded any more. What’s
more, people consider it vital to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Meanwhile, the development of medicine acts as a barrier to
diseases, reducing the chance getting sick. All in all, so
little do we need to worry about that we will be more optimistic
about our life.

script(听力文本)
第一节 听力理解
第1段材料
W: Shall I book your call to the managing director
Miss Takemura for tomorrow?
M: Oh, yes please.
W: What time?
M:
Eight’s usually the best time for her. But a customer is coming in
at 8:30 and we won’t finish our discussion until 9:30. Better
make it ten to be safe.
W:
OK.
第2段材料
W:
Dear, have you bought the drinks for the children?
M:
I’m going to the post office later. I’ll go to the supermarket
on the way home and get some. I don’t think we need anything
else, do we?
W:
Well, I’m not sure we have enough food. You know my cousins always
eat everything when they come round.
M:
That’s OK. I think we’ve got everything we need.
W:
Good! If you could get started with the housework now, I’ll get
started with the cooking. I don’t want to leave everything
until the last minute.
M:
Well, there isn’t much to do, actually. I cleaned and tidied the
living room this morning. Oh, and remember you’ll have to collect
my mum from the train station tomorrow. My car’s in the
garage.
W:
Don’t worry. I haven’t forgotten.
第3段材料
W:
Joe, you weren’t at the gym today.
M: No,
I wasn’t there. In fact, I’ve decided I’m not going there anymore.
To be honest, I was getting a bit fed up with doing the same
exercises all the time.
W: But
you can’t just give up! Who am I going to talk to if you’re not
there?
M:
Well, why don’t you join me in my next project? I was planning to
ask you anyway. I’ve decided to try long-distance
running.
W:
What?! Are you serious? You haven’t done any running for years,
have you?
M: No,
but I’m confident I can get fit enough if I take it step by step
and don’t try to do too much. Why don’t you join me? We can do
together.
W: I
don’t know. I’ve seen how hard that sort of thing is. I’m not
sure I’d find it very easy.
第4段材料
M: Hi,
Jennie, do you hear of the Skill-training Center?
W:
Yes, of course. It aims to help students improve their study
techniques. You know, last term I had to do a research paper, but I
had no idea how to collect research material until I took one of
the courses at the Center.
M: Is
there any course that could help me with exams?
W:
They have one on test-taking skills. You should find that
useful, I think.
M:
You’re probably right. Where is the Center?
W:
They hold most of their courses in the library, but the main
office is in Staunton Hall, right across the square form the
Physics Tower.
M: You
know, I think I’ll go over there right now.
W: Why
don’t you wait until tomorrow? Right now, what you need is to go
home and catch up on your sleep.
第5段材料
M: And
today on our holiday programme we have some information about a
cycling holiday. It is run by Pathway Holidays, and it’s from
Monday 12th June until Saturday 17th
June. On this trip, you cycle from Whitehaven in the northwest
of England to Sunderland in the northeast. The total cost of the
tour is 652 pounds and that includes your hotel, all meals, the
transport of your luggage and a tour guide. This is someone who
knows the area and can tell you about it during the trip. In
fact, the price includes everything except bicycle hire. It’s
possible to hire a bicycle and you should book one in advance if
you want to do that, but they recommend bringing your own bicycle.
It’s often more comfortable to ride one that you are used
to.
Entertainment is
provided in the first hotel in Whitehaven—there’ll be a musical
evening on the first day. On Wednesday evening, the hotel you
are staying in will organize a quiz, and on the last evening—that’s
Friday—there’ll be a party.
If you’d like more
information about the trip, the company Pathway Holidays advises
you to look at their website, and I’ll tell you what that is in
a minute. We’re just going to talk to someone who did this cycling
holiday recently…
第二节听取信息
M:
Good morning. Today I’m going to tell you a little about our school
library. We regard our library as a pool of resources that you may
need. It has a collection of 80,000 books and 90 kinds of
newspapers and magazines. The books are in two categories, those
for lending and those for reference. They are all located on
the first floor. For newspapers and magazines, they are available
on the second floor. Our library is also open to the local
citizens, and there are differences for the students and the
public. Our current students can borrow up to 12 books at a time,
however for the rest, the maximum they can borrow is 9. You need to
return the books on time. Or your library account will be
blocked and you can’t borrow any more books. Remember, books
have different due days according to their popularity. Mostly, the
books can be kept for a month by full-time students, but for
the popular books, you have to bring them back within only one
week. As for reference books, newspapers and magazines, they
cannot be taken out of the library under any circumstances. Then
the opening hour, our library is open from 9:00 a.m. till 10 p.m.
every weekday. For the weekends, it’s only open from 11:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. Please bear that in mind, so you won’t come in vain. To
gain access to the library, you just need to bring your library
card or student card and touch it in front of the touch point
and the door will automatically open for you. Now, any
questions?
