Dudley, which is   18  (probable) the heart of the Black Country, has a history  19  ( date) back over 1,000years, and its famous castle has been there   20   about the 8th century.

People from Black Country are very friendly.  21   their local dialect, which comes from the old “Middle English”, can be very difficult to understand. I still remember taking   22   visiting friend from Canada to a local Black Country pub for lunch.    23  the waitress could even finish describing the menu, my friend looked at me with his eyebrows   24   raise. II.阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)

第一节  阅读理解(共20小题;第小题2分;满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

It was about 11:15 pm on the passenger ship California. The night was freezing cold and the water was filled with ice from the North Pole, making it difficult for the ship to sail on .

In the radio room, operato Cyril Evans listened to the radio-talk between a nearby passenger ship and the telegraph station on the Canadian island of Newfoundland. Evans interrupted it and said, “We’re stopped and surrounded by ice. Be careful as you pass through these waters.” The radio operator on the nearby ship replied, “I’m too busy to talk now. I have many messages to send to the telegraph station. ” Twenty minutes later, as he turned off his radio and went to bed, Evans could still hear the ship sending its passengers’ telegrams.

Earlier in the evening the California’s captain, Stanley Lord, had seen another ship approaching. It looked about the size of his own, but attempts to contact the ship failed. It lay dark and mysterious about 10 miles away. At 12:40 am there appeared a sudden flash of light just over the mysztery ship. Captain Lord, thinking the ship might need help, ordered his officers to signal the ship by lamp. There was no reply. Three more rockets then exploded, none appeared to go higher than halfway up the mast of the mystery ship. Then at about 2:00 am it turned and slipped into the darkness.

In the light of the sawn there was no mystery ship, but 20 miles away was the scene of a great disaster. Unfortunately, the mystery ship had stopped directly in front of the Califoria, preventing people on board from seeing clearly. If this ship had not been there, Captain Lord would have recognized that the rockets were SOS rockets that came not from the mystery ship but from a more distant ship which the California could not see. If Cyril Evans had kept his radio on for just 30 minutes more he would have heard SOS signals coming from that distant ship he spoke with the night before. Critical thinking is an important skill that can increase students’ ability to learn in any situation. This can be applied to traditional education online education, or directly in a career related role Many teachers find it such a valuable skill that they give their students a critical thinking question every day. Developing this ability can mean the difference between “just passing a course” and “understanding the material well enough” so that what students learn from it will follow them throughout their life.

  Some characteristics of a critical thinker that teacher should encourage are;

-asking questions as a reaction to something  read or discussed;

-determining the “deeper meaning” of particular passage or topic;

-providing input and opinions to topics as a direct result of analysis and research; and

-reasoning in an effort to develop an argument of your own opinion.

It is important for a student to understand more than definition(定义).One way to truly understand an idea is to have hands-on practice, and to apply concepts learned in a  textbook. Such “mini-examples” will interest a student and improve their understanding of a topic. This is how life-long skills can be developed.

Teachers that use critical thinking practices in the classroom can “go above and beyond” by asking questions that promote a greater comprehension of the material. Instructors should be able to challenge students and create an environment where they are analyzing material and gaining a better understanding. This will make the classroom move in a direction for learning. It can also help students to stay interested in the course material, as they always have a new concept to consider.

At the same time, students benefit greatly from developing critical thinking skills. When learned early on, these skills can be used throughout their college education. Students can understand how to consider a topic, analyse it, and discuss it from different points of view. These are skills that will benefit them when they are part of the workforce as well.

31Critical thinking can best be described as          .

Aa system to improve people’s memory

Ba method to expand people’s knowledge

Ca way to increase people’s ability to understand

Da process to make people more critical of others

32The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refers to           .

  Athe ability      Bthe difference

  Cthe course      Dthe material

33According to the passage, a critical thinker should           .

Aask questions before reading the material          Bbe able to develop their own opinions

Cpredict the deeper meaning of a topic

       Ddo more analysis and research

34The author thinks “mini-examples” are useful because they            .

Aassist students to better remember definitions

   Bgive students hands-on practice

   Chelp to keep students interested

   Dhelp students develop concepts

35Who are the intended reader of the passage?

     ATeachers.          BParents.                   CExamines.         DHeadmasters.

We all remember seeing hitchhikers, standing by the side of the road, thumb, sticking out, waiting for a lift. But it is getting rare nowadays. What killed hitchhiking? Safety is often mentioned as a reason. Movies about murderous hitchhikers and real-life crime have put many drivers off picking up hitchhikers. That no single women picked me up on my journey to Manchester no doubt reflects the safety fear: a large, strangely dressed man is seen as dangerous.

But the reason may be more complex: hitchhiking happens where people don’t have cars and transport services are poor. Plenty of people still hichhike in Poland and Romania. Perhaps the rising level of car ownership in the UK means the few people lift hitchhiking are usually considered strange. Why can’t they afford cars? Why can’t they take the coach or the train?

Three-quarters of the UK population have access to a car; many of the remainder will be quite old. The potential hitchhiking population is therefore small. Yet my trip proves it’s still possible to hitchhike. The people who pickes me up were very interesting-lawyer, retired surgeon, tank commander, carpenter, man who live in an isolated farmhouse and a couple living up in the mountains. My conclusion is that only really interesting people are mad enough to pick up fat blokes in red, spotted scarves. Most just wanted to do someone a good turn; a few said they were so surprised to see a hitchhiker that they couldn’t help stopping.

The future of hitchhiking most likely lies with car-sharing organized over the Internet, via sites such as hitchhikers. org. But for now, you can still stick your thumb out(actually, I didn’t do much of that, preferring just to hold up my destination sign) and people-wonderful, caring, sharing, unafraid people-will stop.

In the UK, with its cheap coaches and reasonable rail service, I don’t think I’ll make a habit of it. But having enjoyed it so much, I’m ready now to do a big trip across Eurpe and beyond. In the 1970s a female friend of my wife’s hitchhiked to India. How wonderful it would be to have another go, though Afghanistan might be a challenge. I wish I’d got that tank commander’s mobile number.

36The author tried to hitchhike but was rejected by single women drivers because           .

Athey were not heading towards Manchester

Bthey thought most hitchhikers were dangerous

Chitchhiking had been handed and they didn’t want to break the law

Dhe was a strong man in strange clothes who seemed dangerous

37Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

AMovies have discouraged people from hitchhiking

BCar ownership levels are lower in Romania than in the UK.

C25% of UK people don’t have access to cars.

DIncreased car ownership has reduced the need for hitchhiking.

38The “fat blokes in red, spotted scarves” in Paragraph 3 most likely means     .

    Amurderous hitchhikers

    Bfriendly and talkative hitchhikers

    Ctypical hitchhikers

    Dstrange hitchhikers like the author

39According to the author, future hitchhikers are more likely to                 .

Avisit websites and find people to share cars with

Bstand by roads with their thumbs sticking out

Cstick out signs with their destinations written on

Dwait for some kind people to  pick them up

40From the last paragraph, we know that the author          .

   Afrequently hitchhikes in Britain

   Bplans to hitchhike across Europe

Cthinks public transport is safer for travel

Dis going to contact the tank commander

D

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. This is Li Hua from Senior Three. I’m here today to share with you a good lesson from an overseas Chinese student living in Germany. It is a true story.
After years of hard work, this Chinese student graduated with amazing academic achievements. Everyone thought he was going to get a good job easily and have a bright future. But to his disappointment, he was not even allowed the chance for an interview! The third time he was turned down, he couldn’t help telephoning the company to ask why they didn’t want him. The answer was simple. “We don’t hire dishonest people in Germany.”
What was wrong you might wonder? The truth is, shortly after he arrived in Germany, this clever student found that it was easy to skip buying subway tickets. So, to save money, he often went without a ticket. As a result, he had been caught without a ticket in the subway three times.
From this story, we learn that we may get short-term benefits by dishonest means, but the truth will come out sooner or later and the cost is high. So remember: honesty is the best policy.
That’s all for my speech. Thank you!

III. 写作

基础写作
Version 1
Nowadays, the problem of traffic jams in cities is as serious as that of air pollution. Some suggested solutions to these problems include a reduction in the use of private cars and an increase in the practice of car-pooling, where one car is shared by several workmates or friends. In addition, the government could improve the public transport system in order to make it more convenient for people. The government should also encourage cycling by building more green lanes. This will help save money, time and energy as well as improve the environment.
Version 2
The problems of traffic jams and air pollution have aroused increasing attention recently. Some of the possible solutions to these problems are as follows. First, car owners could share their cars with their friends and workmates, thus reducing the use of private cars. Second, the government could make it more convenient for its citizens to use public transport by improving the public transport system and encourage cycling by building more green lanes. By taking the above measures, we could surely save money, time and energy as well as improve the environment.

Version 1
In this speech, Li Hua spoke of an overseas Chinese student who couldn’t find a job because of his dishonesty. The story shows us that honesty really is the best policy.
After reading this speech, I felt really sorry for the student who had thrown away his years of hard work, great academic achievements and a promising future just for some short-term benefits. Now, he knows better than anyone that dishonesty costs dearly.
My classmates Wang Tao once made a similar mistake. During a math quiz, he was having trouble working out a problem. When the teacher looked away, he peeked and copied the answer from his classmate. He was glad that he had a high mark in the quiz. But when he came across a similar question in the final exam, he didn’t know how to solve it and eventually failed the test.
While dishonesty helped him in the short-term during the quiz, it hurt him in the long-term because he didn’t revise that type of problem for the final exam. I shall always remember this lesson and be an honest person.

Version 2
Today I read an instructive speech, in which the speaker argues honesty is the best policy by telling the story of an overseas Chinese student who couldn’t find a job because of his dishonesty.
After reading this speech, I felt really sorry for the student who had ruined his own promising future just for some short-term benefits. On the other hand, I also thought it was correct to punish someone who had been dishonest.
I once read another story about dishonesty. In that story the author found himself alone in his headmaster’s office, where he accidentally found the writing contest paper. He was going to take part in the competition and so couldn’t resist the temptation to read it. As he prepared well beforehand, he won the first prize in the contest. But instead of feeling happy and proud, he felt guilty. This feeling started the moment he decided to read the paper and it followed him all his life.
From these stories, I really learned the lesson that honest is the best policy. In life we are often tempted to be dishonest, but for a happy and guilt-free life we know what the best choice is.
