BEIJING - Not only did
Michael Phelps tie Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals in one
Olympics, he equaled it on Saturday morning with a classic of a
cliffhanger, one of the closest and most-controversial victories in
the sport in recent years.
Big-event suspense hung in the air at the Water Cube for several
seconds, for the spectators and swimmers alike. It wasn't clear
Phelps won the 100-meter butterfly against Milorad Cavic of Serbia,
in 50.58 seconds to 50.59, and had tied Spitz's legendary
accomplishment, set in 1972.
Video replays were equally confusing and after the scoreboard
showed a "shocked" Phelps had won by the narrowest of margins, one
hundredth of a second, there was still this question:
Did Phelps touch first or didn't he?
