The 67,500t ex-Soviet Navy Kuznetsov class aircraft possibly refurnish at Dalian Shipyard in Northeast will be reactivated to serve as a training aircraft carrier in the PLA Navy.

The Russian Su-33 naval fighter is considered to be an ideal candidate for Varyag should it become operational. The aircraft, which was developed from the Su-27 fighter, is fully compatible with the Russian-designed carrier, though China may wish to develop an indigenous carrier fighter on the basis of its third-generation fighter.
