A story told by an American landlord

My dearest Chinese (former)
housemate's name is Ye Ping. He somehow managed
to come to the US by dint of having been given the wrong English
test, so his friend told me. Another guy (Andres,
a German/Polish man from Brazil) living here at the time helped him
out by taping words to objects in the kitchen. Mr. Ye longed for
his wife to join him, and miraculously (it seemed to us; Mr. Ye had
recently converted to Christianity) she eventually was permitted to
do so. The evening he told me the news, I said to
him, Let's go upstairs and tell the others. When
we did, my friend Andres asked him: "How will your wife get here?"
Mr. Ye replied: "Airmail." You
can imagine how hard we laughed! When the time came for his wife to
arrive, Andres, another housemate, and I drove to NYC to pick her
up at the airport and tour the city for the weekend.Needless to
say, she did not arrive in an airmail envelope.
There's a P.S. to Mr. Ye's story.He did not want
to go back to China and be the swimming coach that the government
wanted him to be (he was one of China's swimming champs).
Instead, he wanted to work in electronics, which
he had come to love through his collaboration with Andres on
several projects. Lo and behold, the Tyananmen
incident permitted him and his wife to stay here permanently, and
even his son was allowed to join him. They moved
to California where Mr. Ye happily got engaged in electronics
work!
