Observer》
Chinese Pediatric Surgeon on Operations at
JFK
A
Chinese Pediatric surgeon Dr.Gang Wang, has been telling the Daily
Observer,in an exclusive interview, about some of the surgical
operations he had performed on kids.
Dr.Wang
who has been at the John F. Kennedy(JFK) Medical Center in Sinkor
for about six months, said since entering the Pediatric Section of
the Hospital,he had performed about 40 surgeries, including inquinal
and umbilical hernia,hydrocele,appendicitis and bowl
perforation.Others included intussusception,bladder stone and
gastroschisis.
The last
of the operations, gastroschisis, was recently performed on an infant
who was born with his intestine outside.
Gastroschisis
is a birth defect in which an infant’s intestines stick out of the
body through a defect on one side of the umbilical cord.
Speaking
about the operation, the Chinese medical doctor, who is part of a
12-person Chinese volunteers in the country, stated that the
procesure to close the opening, which is usually 12 to 13
centimeters long,on the child’s stomach lasted an hour and a
half.
“He was
only seven months and two weeks old when he was born;this means he
was born premature and at birth he weighted 2.5 kilograms,”Dr.Wang
disclosed.
Giving his personal opinion about the health situation in the
country, the Chinese volunteer said since entering the JFK Pediatric
Section,he has observed that Liberia needs more medical doctors. He
stated that in the surgical department at JFK,there were only three
doctors, with whom he communicates regularly on cases that come to
the department.
As for
the Pediatric Section,Dr.Wang indicated he is the only Pediatric
Surgeon at the hospital but added that one Dr.Moses, who served as
his assistant during the gastroschisis surgery,is capable of
performing surgery on kids,as well.
Another
thing the Chinese medical doctor hinted was lack of enough beds for
the Pediatric Section.”I see that more and more people bring their
children for surgical procedures, but we can’t admit them because we
do not have enough beds. Before my one year is over,I want to
perform as many surgeries for more children before I go back,”he
said.
He
operated on the little yet to be named,on January 7, 2010.
Dr.Wang, however, praised the doctors and nurses at the nation’s only
referral hospital.”The doctors and nurses here at JFK are
hardworking.Because of their hard work,I am encouraged to
work,too.”
Jimama
N.Myers, mother of the child with gastroschisis, confirmed that her
son was born with his intestine outside and said she had lost hope
that her son would have survived past the day of birth.”I am really
thankful to the Chinese doctor for helping to save my son’s
life,”she added.Her child was born January 6.

Jimama
