常家的儒商气质不仅表现在商业活动中，在住宅建设上也得到充分体现。常家庄园无处不在的文化气息与其他北方地主宅院绝不雷同。

常家庄园既有北方建筑的雄浑方正，又有南方园林的精灵雅秀。体现着常家独有的文化取向。如今不论走在常家庄园的哪个角落，都能感受到浓厚儒雅的文化气息扑面而来。

中国的古建筑为保护木质构件不被侵蚀过早损坏对暴露部分都要施以彩绘。中国建筑彩绘从春秋出现，在清代达到全盛。

常家的门楣雕刻异常精美。尽管年代久远色彩脱落，还是能够想象出当年的辉煌。

常家庄园的几千扇大小窗户，都覆盖着精美的木质雕刻。过去中国北方民居都是要在这些木雕后面贴上窗户纸御寒和掩盖隐私的。现如今木质窗雕的后面都装上了玻璃使木质窗雕的味道有了很大改变。

不知常家庄园如何躲过战火和文革的摧残。大多数木雕都得到很好的保护。从木质和花纹形态不难看出年代久远的痕迹。这些窗雕多数是变化莫测的几何图形、还有一些是精美的花鸟鱼虫装饰。几乎没有重复。门楣雕刻更是题材各异，绝无重复。欣赏这些浸透中国传统文化韵味的木雕，让我流连忘返迟迟不愿离开。

回想我和朋友曾经在尼泊尔加德满都的巴德岗杜巴广场仔细寻找孔雀窗。殊不知近在咫尺的常家庄园木雕更精美！
