When we try to understand the wisdom
of Yoga and its healing powers,
it would be quite fascinating to
know that without any specific medical background, how these
ancient yogis were able to discuss the human body in such detail.
In various Upanishads, Yogic Texts and Vedas the sages had given
indepth exploration on anatomy, physiology, psychology, medical
science and above all; the knowledge, beyond any science could
prove today.

Nadis at the
Subtle Body Level

Autonomic Nervous System at Gross Body
level
The sages had discussed the human body not only at gross level, but
also even deeper at subtle and causal level. When they talked about
the Prana, the life force, it was definitely the subtle form of the
breath we survive on. A step ahead it was the energy which makes
the blood, flow through the arteries and veins. It was also the
nutrients and oxygen and even the hormones which make the body
move, various organs and faculties to function with in. It was also
various sensory perceptions, and electric impulses produced at
various specific brain centers. That was what they talked about
Pancha Prana and Pancha Upa-Prana. If we analyse the whole system
its nothing but the play of energy at various levels, both internal
and external to human body.

When we search the literature, we find enormous information on
Nadis. Some Yogic Texts says there are thousands of nadis in our
body. Our concern is not the number, but importance of their
function. They are closely related with nerves in our gross body.
Out of the innumerable Nadis 14 are said to be
important-
1. Sushumna Nadi,
2. Ida Nadi,
3. Pingala Nadi,
4. Gandhari Nadi,
5. Hastajihva Nadi,
6. Kuhu Nadi,
7. Saraswati Nadi,
8. Pusha Nadi,
9. Sankhini Nadi,
10. Payasvini Nadi,
11. Varuni Nadi,
12. Alambusha Nadi,
13. Vishvodhara
Nadi,
14. Yasasvini Nadi
Mostly
talked and taught nadis in Yogic system are Sushumna, Ida and
Pingala. We need to find the connection between these principle
nadis and our autnomic nervous system- sympathetic and
parasympathetic.

1. Pingala
Nadi: Associated with the sun, male or active energy in
our body; represented by the right nostril. Our sympathetic nervous
system has the nerve endings at the right nostril too. When the
right side dominates, the personality becomes very dry and
aggressive to achieve the the success, name and fame involve all
the left brain activities, that is the logical brain. Blinded by
ego, sensitivity to our own emotions is diminished. Taken to this
extreme, right-sided behavior leads to heart disease. This shows
the similarity with the functions of our sympathetic nervous
system.
2. Ida
Nadi: Associated with the moon, female or passive energy
in our body; represented by the left nostril and parasympathetic
nervous system. This provide the energy for our desires and
emotions which travel to the appropriate places in the body to
bring about the actions of fulfillment. Our desires are essential
for action. Without which, we would have nothing to act upon. It
may be blocked by emotional or physical injuries experienced in
living life. Problems of the left side tend to result in passivity
or emotional extremism whereby we are thrown between elation and
depression. With this type of imbalance, self-discipline becomes
difficult and bad habits become hard to correct. In the worst case,
we become lethargic and self-obsessed.
3. Sushumna
Nadi: This is the central channel, which bring about the
balance, the homeostasis at all levels. When sushumna activates,
the left and right nostrils flows together, and the state of
meditation, relaxation, peace and tranquility is achieved. The
immune system and pranic store is rejuvenated and diseases are
removed.

If we analyse the functions of nadis and autonomic nervous system
we find greater resemblance. This understanding can provide us the
understanding of all major diseases and their cure through Yoga
Therapy along with other streams of medicines. When there is
dissonance or disharmony or disturbance between the active
(sun) and Passive (moon) energies, there is
disease and when there is resonance, balance or
harmony then there is good health, there is activation of Sushumna,
flow of meditation, and light of
wisdom.
Through this article, the intension is only to
give a basic understanding about nadis and nervous
system. Yoga therapy can not be understood or
applied without these basic principle
connections. This work will continue further with
more refinements based on experience and valuable
suggestions.
